the Flaming Lips need to be back on the farm next year, and the Soft Bulletin would be an awesome treat this years roo was pretty fun, but it needed some more wayne coyne
It's like, if I hand you a sandwich and am all "hey man, have a bit of this delicious ham sandwich," and then you take a bite and hand it back and are all "I'm disappointed, I was hoping for a turkey sandwich," you'd be insane
Like curate a tent. He did that collaboration this year with a bunch of different artists, I bet he could do an amazing job. Plus he could ramble his ass off between shows and do all sorts of random artsy things. Come out and experiment with different instruments, sounds and other shtuff...
That would be cool - and lose the confetti cannons.
Flaming Lips have done late night three times already - 2003, 2007, 2010. Let's try something different. If they're going to be back, why not have them close out Which Stage one night, or do something weird/unique/vintage Flaming Lips-esque, rather than the same old tired show?
not sure i would call them performing the soft bulletin in its entirety the "same old tired show," they rarely play any more SB than Race for the Prize in their regular sets, but i suppose i understand where youre coming from. i would love to see them get a pre-HL which stage slot, but in that case they would probably not be doing the SB so that would actually be the "same old tired show" that you speak of

yes, that would be extremely cool. not sure why the hate on the confetti cannons though- i really enjoy the Lips show (in addition to being a huge fan of their music) and hope they keep adding new wrinkles to it
wayne coyne curated tent -> Soft Bulletin LN ^would be the best thing to ever happen on the farm

I dont "hate" the confetti cannons. However, they are a little tired, and I know how creative Wayne is. I bet he could come up with something brand spankin new to replace them, that would be just as cool.

I'd say let Wayne curate a tent with bands (hopefully not all weird as shiz bands though) and then The Flips close which stage while some semi-headliner performs (like Byrne closing the Which stage as Beastie Boys are on What).

thats very understandable- ive only seen them twice so nothing about their show has grown tired for me yet.
but now im trying to imagine what wayne would do if roo gave him a stage for a whole day, and im totally drawing a blank. it could go in a million different directions. what types of bands do yall think he might get?
I'd say let Wayne curate a stage with bands (hopefully not all weird as shiz bands though)
hahaha i dunno i feel like wayne might only want weird as shiz bands, which might make it more appropriate for one of the tents... but FL should be on a stage so i dunno.... difficult decisions

After the Party in the Park in Atlanta, I got to talk to Wayne for about 30 minutes. One of the things he said was that their current goal is to be doing one-offs of Yoshimi, in the same vein as the past year and a half's SB shows, in 2013.
02/08 Tool 02/11 Jeff Mangum 02/17 of Montreal 02/29 Blind Pilot 03/31 The Naked & The Famous 05/14 M83 and I Break Horses 05/19 Flaming Lips, Young the Giant, Dawes and AWOLNATION 06/07 Bonnaroo 2012!!! 06/13 Roger Waters 07/28 Toadies
I bet he could do something with bubbles, like find a way to do millions of tiny ones so it looks like its snowing... with lasers firing through them to light them up in the colors he uses so well. Maybe hang 500 disco balls with lights and lasers on every one of them at the top of the tent. Maybe some kind of stage like Amon Tobin uses in his ISAM show, but different shapes, and not just on stage, like it could extend from the stage across through the roof of the tent (and stay there for years to come). I think making use of the ceiling of one of the tents would be totally fly. Something like Freemont street in Vegas (if you don't know what that is, look it up - its pretty sweet) but set up so the light guys can bust some serious moves on that thing. He could do something with silly string, like 1000 cans of it from every corner or some system to fire it from the edges of the tent at different angles to hit most of the crowd. maybe put 5' wide rolls of recycled tissue paper at the back of the tent and send it forward covering the entire crowd then using the lights to make it glow in different colors right in front of every person in the tent.
My point is, there is so many different things that could be done, and I am not even that creative, that the confetti cannon can be retired. I am sure that if you saw another FLips show and Wayne came up with something totally different but equally as colorful and fun, you would like it just as much, maybe more. I would too.
I know he can come up with something. This is the guy who came up with a record filled with blood, and gave away gummy fetuses with a special edition of his CD.

I'm down, as long as he keeps the confetti cannons.'
Also, Yoshimi is my fav FLips album by far. Probably close to my top 5 or 10 albums of all time. I reallllly would love to see it on the farm!
I would like to see the Flaming Lips invest in about 25 watts of laser power. They'd also need to invest in someone who knows how to coordinate the lasers to their music and not melt everyone in the crowds eyelids.

juggs, you make some very interesting points. wayne and the lips walk a fine line with their current popularity, they have enough mainstream appeal that they cannot 100% completely embrace the absolute weirdness that makes them as awesome as they are. their recorded music has not gotten any less boundary-pushing, but as you point out their live show has definitely stagnated. every time the lips put on a show the masses show up and they come to see the confetti cannons and the hamster ball. theres nothing inherently wrong with this, and pleasing the masses doesnt have to always be seen as a negative, but i do agree that it pigeonholes the band a little, and sort of forces them into a rut. this is probably why wayne is constantly doing completely random shiz, like all the gummy stuff and breaking the record for shows in 24 hours. it all still looks and sounds like vintage lips weirdness but itd be nice if the live performances were a little more unpredictable.

^this is the crux of the issue right here: tons of lips fans want them to move in a new direction and stay unpredictably weird, but tons want to see the same amazing show they put on the last time they toured. just look at all the complaints on the radiohead board about them not playing anything from the bends/ ok comp

They will either switch things up or keep the same show, I could CARE LESS! Their visuals are cool and all, but I just want to hear their songs and will love seeing them no matter how they go about it. Fwiw, I'd lovvvve to see Yoshimi in its entirety. Great fucking album.

nothing will ever change the fact that the lips are one of my all-time favorite bands, but that doesnt mean we cant discuss the direction that they have been heading in. even if they dont change their show at all, i will go see it again and love the shit out of it. but a band whose one defining characteristic is weirdness should never become predictable, and the lips live show is teetering on the brink of that. btw, yoshimi is amazing and all (one of my fav all time albums) but to me soft bulletin is THE defining lips album and i would much prefer to see sb in its entirety on the farm than yoshimi

Bonnaroo needs to boom some new acts. Not the same exact show from the exact same band every other year.
ok, but if the lips did soft bulletin or yoshimi it wouldnt be the same exact show, and its not like the lips were on the farm this year or even last year, and when they were in 2010 they did dark side so that was totally different. i understand what youre saying and i agree in sentiment, but i would consider a one-off SB a special event and i would love to see it on the farm
edit- hahaha that or maybe im just a sucker for the lips, one or the other

I've got to say it. I've tried. I've seen them three times and never stayed for the whole thing. They just lose me really quickly with all of the "come on motherf*ckers" and they never have capitalized on the massive amount of momentum they come out with. The lull in the middle has always been too much for me. I'm a big fan of their music, just not their live show (past the spectacle aspect of the opening.)

10% the first and 90% the latter. But I'm with you 100%. If we're gonna repeat any act, make it the FLips running through an album!
Although I can understand the argument for a different spot, as long as it's after dark. If they do late HL acts like 2011, then a Primus/BS spot would work well too. It would be mostly unopposed, still be after dark, but it wouldn't take away the LN Which spot.
After seeing them at Hangout, someone pointed out very well to me what seemed to be misfiring.
There were 2 parts to the show. They played some FLips first, then went into Dark Side.
When they played Dark Side, he pretty much played through with only a couple of small breaks to talk about the money in the balloons and the eclipse. Other than that, they played on through and it was fantastic.
HOWEVER, when they were playing Lips stuff, he kept starting and wanting the crowd to carry. He did this without building any momentum so everyone just stood there waiting for him to take it but he didnt. It was like he wanted the crowd to juice HIM before HE juiced the CROWD.
He just seemed to be off timing or something, and it made some of it a little (uncomfortable?) off. Like he misfired or something.
The SHOW was fantastic. He played 4 of my favorite 5 songs (out of 5). The only they didn't play was Turn It On. Setlist was perfect for me, and still... left me a little perplexed.
It was like he wanted the crowd to juice HIM before HE juiced the CROWD.
wayne is obsessed with audience participation, and sometimes it can come at the expense of the overall quality of the music. wayne must feel that the concert experience as a whole is vastly improved when the crowd is screaming out every word and he clearly wants the audience to become an integral part of the music. i agree that at times his shtick can drag on and upset the rhythm/timing of the show, but wayne's goofy stage act is what a lot of people show up to see there are countless lips fans (i may or may not be one of them) who love every single thing that wayne does or says, simply because of the intensely positive energy that he brings with him in everything that he does. so as much as i would love to see a lips show with no speeches pumping up the crowd or forced sing-a-longs, i very much doubt that wayne will stop anytime soon

i guess i can see why non-lips fans might get frustrated by another lips LN which show. i kinda assumed they would get LN which but pre-HL which could also happen. in all honesty i saw them in the evening at voodoo fest in 2009 and that was an excellent show. i cant remember how early that started but it was definitely before sunset. the show's visuals were not as striking before the sunset but the transition into night was breathtaking

I love the Soft Bulletin and have enjoyed the FLips repeatedly but I'm also kind of burnt out on them. Would rather a bunch of other acts get one of those upper tier slots than the Lips
I am definitely of the opinion that Flips are overdone, especially at Roo. However, I would for certain check out the show if they did this (their undisputed masterpiece) instead of the same old shiz. Their DSOTM was bad, both conceptually and in execution, but to do Soft Bulletin, I'd actually be interested in seeing and hearing it.
Edit: those who have been on this board for long enough may know that I thought the 07 show was bad, too... some was good, but most was horrendous with Wayne just... blathering... and I will never forget how fucking horrible the performance of Yoshimi was at that show... restarting the song over and over until the crowd was loud enough for his tastes. This is definitely a band that, in the live setting, needs a gimmick to be interesting, anymore... if that gimmick happens to be playing their best album in full with no nonsense from Wayne, then that's a gimmick I can get behind.
