Tool without new material isn't worth it. I say this as a Tool fan with an unhealthy obsession from the Lateralus release up until 10,000 Days. If we get the same show that has been on the road since 2006, Quack that.

As a Tool fan who doesn't seem to know that they are/have been working on a new album?
Tool will be in Japan the Sunday before HMF. With that being said, it doesn't take a week to travel from Japan. With that being said, I still don't think Tool will play HMF. I do think, however, that they will be at VoodooFest, which is why I bought my tickets back in November.

Which is probably what the news is about.
They've been supposedly working on new material since like freaking 2009. If it's been Blair's updates I realize that means it's happening, but it's still too early to get excited when you Maynard levels of weenieery.
Justin, Danny and Adam give the types of interviews where they'll say something like "we're always writing, we're always working on new ideas" and fans on the blogs/message boards expect an album in six months. I gave up on that. The Tool rumor mill is mostly one let down after another. When I see an announcement about a new Tool album on Blabbermouth, I'll get excited.

These are the type of days that can drive posters on message boards nuts. We woke up with the chance of a line-up and nothing. In the meantime, posters have nothing better to do but get anxious, which brings out the best in everyone. I still think we will know something within this week. A next week release would be in the shadow of a Wierd Al announced Roo. HO needs to make sure it gets in the game of competing with Roo and not playing little sibling. Welp here's to hearing something this week! (crackin open a beer)

I talked to a guy today about the Big Kahuna package that HMF offers and he couldn't tell me when the lineup would drop except to say soon. Same with when the next wave of tickets would go on sale. By the way, if you want Big Kahuna, it's available now, but costs $5000 a ticket.

But Maynard is a summers breeze and is probably lying.
Does not surprise me at all. But I don't think this lessens the chance of a Tool summer tour and/or a Hangout appearance. Danny/Justin/Adam need the money to live off of, and Maynard enjoys the easy payday.

Dream Lineup: TAB Pretty Lights Avett (in lieu of a shizzy, overrated mumson headliner) Umphrey's Passion Pit The Postal Service Atoms for Peace Earl Sweatshirt Machine Gun Kelly CagetheElephant (unlikely but they were the best show last year, hands down) Michal Menert Conspirator Beats Antique The Revivalists Manchester Orchestra
not saying this is going down, but I'd personally be super siked about it.

Cage the Elephant wasn't even close to the best last year. Opinions are like jerkstores, I know....but Gogol Bordello, Steve Winwood and Gary Clark Jr. VIP set beg to differ.

I think the Yeah Yeah Yeahs would be a logical guess as to who could fill up one of the pre headliner 7 o' clock sets. And I'd be fine with that. They put on a damn fine live show.
Tame Impala also released a small string of May/June dates today, and they said they'll be releasing more dates very soon. It'd be questionable because they're in Portland on May 26th, and then they're making their way to ATL on June 17th, so they'd be making 2 trips to the Southeast in a month's span if they were to play Hangout. Can't fully rule them out as of right now though. So who knows. That would be orgasmic to see them bad boys on the beach.
Another possibility that would make some sense while being totally awesome is Modest Mouse. They've booked a couple Festivals so far and they have a large open space of dates between April and June, which means they'll definitely be doing SOMETHING in MAY. Again, I'd be very pleased if they made the trip to the Gulf.
When you say Pre-HL, do you mean the band that plays on the Hangout Stage before the main act? We've had some pretty big bands play before the HL on the second stage (whatever its called throughout the years), inclusing The Black Keys, Wilco, FLips, SCI, etc
