I'm selling my two weenieets to one of my good friends that lives in LA for face value and doing VIP at Roo instead. Lineup needed a few more acts that I love and haven't seen yet to be worth my moneys. Undercard is impressive, but not as impressive as Primavera for my tastes. If I lived within reasonable driving distance (<10hours), I would be all over it though.
5/25: Dillinger Escape Plan
5/30: Andrew W.K. w/ Tony Clifton
6/1: Big Boi w/ Killer Mike
6/13-16: BONNAROO
6/29: Bob Dylan, Wilco, MMJ
6/30: The Grandmothers of Invention
7/11: Seinfeld
7/20: Living Colour
8/1: Mastodon w/ Machine Head
8/7: Melvins
9/5: Iron Maiden w/ Megadeth
10/2: The Legendery Pink Dots
11/1-3: VOODOO
11/14-17: BEAR CREEK
- Initial freakout - people saying Coachella messed up this year - wild speculation about missing headliners - looking into the undercard - excitement over the stacked but underappreciated undercard and the fact that they book fresh/new headliners
Started off with more disappointment but most seem to be coming around. Like most festivals the initial response is "WHY IS THIS NOT THE BEST EVER!?!??!" and then it sinks in that it'll still be damn awesome.
a realistic response?
I scarcely believe it.
i basically went through the same thing.
i was hoping for something good to replace the stones on sunday, but who quacking cares right? coachella is king.

at least you're doing vip at the right fest. it's not worth it at coachella.
my list of acts i want to actively see is already at 44 and i've only listened to a few bands.
Also from that CoS article, from the Stone Roses blurb: "Whether they’ll be performing from their 1994 hit Second Coming or the new album purportedly in the works, remains to be seen."
Second Coming was the hit. Get it together, CoS.
Not sure what your complaint is. I don't know Stone Roses well but seems like they are saying they aren't sure if they'll play stuff from the '94 album (Second Coming) or the new one. What's the error?
Second Coming is one of the most notorious sophomore slumps ever. It was considered a letdown after the stone cold classic that was the first album. It was literally a punchline in Shaun of the Dead. I personally don't think it's a bad album, but it's definitely not their "hit." Also, they played quite a few dates in 2012, and the set lists were dominated by the first album, so we have a pretty good idea what they'll play. Whoever wrote that blurb knows nothing about the band, which is pretty standard for CoS. Easily the worst writers of any major music site.
Also, I stand by my dig at the "next day" thing, because most people who read CoS probably woke up to this lineup.

I was initially happy, and have become even more so!
I'll be seeing 2/3 headliners, which is more than I see at Bonnaroo most years. Not to mention all 3 days will be packed with stuff I love but haven't yet seen.
You said "Second Coming was the hit" in your original post, problem dog. I'm guessing you meant their debut/self-titled.
That language was straight from the blurb. I was repeating it because I thought it was ridiculous. Sorry, I should have put quotes around it. I see how it was unclear.

I think the reaction is the same as this board when the lineup comes out:
You will always get people who hate the headliners and those that love them. After that, it is the undercard. I am going because it is just a really great festy so much different than The Roo.....cr****

Again, I don't know much at all about the band so I trust your judgement and knowledge of them to be better and I'm sure many music fans/critics enjoy the first album more. Being ignorant I looked at the chart positions for the two albums and the "Second Coming" one is higher in every country (including UK) so I figured that's why it was mentioned.
Also, the blurb doesn't say it's their only "hit album" but that it's a "hit '94 album" which to me makes it slightly different.
So like I said....I don't know anything about Stone Roses so feel free to write this off and ignore it. I just didn't find anything particularly terrible about that blurb. Though I do totally understand with your desire for them to have someone who knows stuff about the band to write about them. I hate reading reviews for albums, movies, TV shows when the person reviewing or writing about it has no real interest and it's just like homework for them. Passion about the thing you're writing does help.

Conflicts on Saturday are going to kick my quacking ass.
This is like 90% of my choices. Conflicts are going to be TERRIBLE. Luckily I've just seen or will see some of these in the coming months. Plus, I hope a bunch are playing 'Roo.
I think this is an extremely, solid lineup. I hate to us the word "underwhelming," but with the general public, that's essentially what happened. Coachella has built a history of having, at least one, awesome, knockout headliner every year, and for whatever reason, whether purposefully or having the Stones dropout, it didn't happen this year. Leaving many to throw their hands up in the air and say "WTF!!"
But at the end of they day the undercard still rules and the headliners, as a whole, are still really good. They just don't have the WOW factor for most people. Having The Postal Service news leak out early didn't help them any, either, because, in my opinion, that's a really nice reunion get that a lot of us have been hoping for for years.
The festival will still be great, as it always is, and those that go will have way more to do and see than they have time. I don't feel bad about not going this year, compared to how I usually feel when their lineup drops, partly because I have a strong feeling that Roo will be great, but I still wish I was going to be there.
5/11/13: Sweetlife Festival
5/16/13: The Flaming Lips
5/20/13: Fitz and the Tantrums
6/7-6/9: Governors Ball
6/13-6/16: Bonnaroo
6/21-23: Firefly (???)
7/11-13 Camp Bisco
8/31-9/1: Made In America
9/27-29 Tomorrowworld (???)

To give some context that you might understand a little better, ITM, it'd be similar to if Neil Young & Crazy Horse were booked for Bonnaroo and the blurb said, in all seriousness, "Whether he plays his classic stuff from Trans or his new material remains to be seen."
Problem Dog is right, whoever wrote that blurb knows nothing about The Stone Roses. And agreed that CoS's writers are generally abysmal.
I, too, am beginning to really warm up to this lineup. After committing to it so far in advance it's easy to feel somewhat disappointed, especially after the last few years. But there are a lot of acts on here that I've never seen that I can't wait for.
I'm pumped and ready to have quacking blast, y'all.

We say the mid 90's, mid 80's etc, I never hear the mid 00's but I haven't been to Coachella since the mid 00's so I am excited. I've been a member of that board since 06 so I hope to meet some old friends. I have never been to Burning Man so that has taken a lot of my thinking lately, like I have a lot of thinking to use cr****
I wrote for CoS once upon a time. I was pretty abysmal.
I'm sure you were a diamond in the rough over there. Except the rough over there is REALLY rough, it's like a giant steaming pile of various animal droppings. You were a diamond in the pile of animal sh*t.
April 12-14th - Indio, CA - Coachella Weekend 1
May 3-5th - Memphis, TN - Beale St. Music Festival
June 13-16th - Manchester, TN - Bonnaroo
July 12-14th - Louisville, KY - Forecastle Festival
August 2-4th - Chicago, IL - Lollapalooza
September 27-29th - Atlanta, GA - TomorrowWorld
October 25-27th - Asheville, NC - Mountain Oasis
I keep looking at the lineup over and over, wishing more and more I didn't live on the other side of the country. I would actually choose this over Bonnaroo at this point if the locations were reversed.
