Ok you're right, i've heard it a million times. Just never knew who sang it. Upon quick skim, i'm familiar with Coffee and TV as well. Hmm. Still don't think they would headline Coach.

And nothing personal to those who don't know them. I'm not casting judgment, I'm just saying it bother me that people here don't, because their catalog is really good and should be known.

It doesn't bother me that people don't know them. There are lots of great artists that I, for one reason or another, don't know anything about. What bothers me is the knee-jerk "if I don't know them, they must not be a big deal" reaction.
Sidenote: Daft Punk's Discovery was their highest charting U.S. album, juuuuust squeezing into the top 50.

I'm assuming that had One More Time on it?
Just like The Blur, I don't know their stuff other than the big hit.

Daft Punk has a well-known image...the robots and pyramids that have toured across the US. The catchy singles, including one that Kanye sampled. The fact that they did an entire soundtrack for a major motion picture. Most of my non-musical friends aren't very familiar with DP, but pretty much anyone who follows music is.
I wasn't saying Blur isn't talented because I didn't know of them...all I was saying was that if I don't know them, considering how much I follow the music scene, I doubt they have the massive drawing power to headline Coachella, the cream of the crop of American festivals.
As I look into this more, I realize Juggs' odds might be a little better than I initially thought. I thought Blur was just some new band that was popular overseas...I didn't realize they had been around forever and had hits in the states in the 90's, and Coach loves nabbing rare reunions.

And before Daft Punk was all these things, they headlined festivals in 2007. They're famous BECAUSE they were given headlining spots based mostly on European and cult success.

mjb, when did you start following music? We're the same age, and Blur was definitely still relevant when we were in our early teens. Their last album came out in 2003, and they were still a big enough band that I remember reading reviews of it everywhere.

There's No Other Way and Girls and Boys are also still used in commercials and movies quite a bit these days. But I was already out of my teens in the 90s so I may notice them more readily when I hear them these days.

Without giving you too much of my life story, I was extremely sheltered. Conservative religious parents, homeschooling, that whole thing. I really wasn't allowed to listen to "secular" music as they called it until my teens, and even then it was only the mild pop stuff...BSB, N Sync, etc that was out at the time. I wouldn't say I really got into music until I started playing guitar at 15 and got into classic rock, and then in college broadened my horizons with other genres.
In short, I haven't really listened to anything of substance pre-2002.

Indeed. There are a ton of big artists outside of what I usually listen to/go see that I don't know about. I'd never immediately write anything off, though. Hard to listen to everything.

Holy crap. You're like a blank canvas. Need any recommendations? You listened to Pulp yet?

Ah, well then it makes sense that Blur is a blind spot for you. Not old enough to be "classic," and they called it quits right when you started getting into music.
Most of my non-musical friends aren't very familiar with DP, but pretty much anyone who follows music is.
I'd be willing to bet there's just as many people who know Blur and have never heard of Daft Punk. $350.
Honestly, I'm TERRRIBLE with older band names. The only reason I know who Daft Punk are is because of the fact that they're a legend on Coachella message boards. I know their music when i hear it, but not that it's them. Blur, I KNEW the name immediately, but didn't know exactly what songs they sang. They're bigger than Daft Punk in my mind, but both are not headliners that would get my friends to want to come to the show with me. *shrug* Then again, my friends are idiots and didn't know who Arcade Fire was. I'm sorrounded by people into pop/hip-hop/country. Alternative music people might recognize the names, but young people who aren't specifically alternative fans won't.
In other news, I need new friends. Haha. They need like one of those adventure group sites, but solely for people to go to concerts. Hate when none of my friends want to go. :-(

I go to many concerts solo. It sucks trying to convince friends to throw money down on somethign they may be unsure about. Sometimes it's a good way to meet people.

So true. I'm thinking how cool it would be to still have a very first listen of The Queen Is Dead or 3 Feet High and Rising or Doolittle or Mezzanine still ahead of me.
