Like I said, I'm not betting anyone anything. And I completely agree that they're bigger than Pulp. But do I think they're as big as Radiohead, Paul McCartney, The Killers, Kanye West, Muse, Gorillaz, The Black Keys, etc.? Not in the US. I know overseas popularity is a factor, but this is still a US fest. I really could see them on the top line, but as #2, not #1.
Also, using your logic, The Stones Roses could headline Coachella too, since they're close to Blur in popularity in the UK (at least that's the impression I'm under).
What do you mean Blur isn't as big as Paul McCartney? NO WAY.
The Blur would draw a bigger crowd at Coachella than the Killers. I'm fairly confident in that.
I just named headliners off of the top of my head that have played in the last 5 years. I would still put them below Arcade Fire and Kings of Leon at their time of headlining for that matter. Not worldwide, but in the US. Trust me, I've seen some of the videos of 50,000+ singing along to Blur songs at other festivals, but I truly don't think they'd get #1 at Coach. Also, I totally disagree about The Killers.
Blur is way bigger than any of the other bands people are citing for comparisons (Pulp, MBV). They have cult status in the U.S. I'm in no way saying that they are the headliner Goldenvoice was dreaming of when they started booking, but clearly they're having some trouble getting acts and I think them settling on Blur as a headliner is pretty likely.
I wasn't citing MBV as someone as big as Blur, but as another act who was billed fairly high with no massive charting success in the US. I agree 100% that Blur can be a top line at Coachella. If I were going to Coachella, I'd go see them.

There is a much larger fanbase for the Killers in the US than there is for the Blur (just look at album sales and previous tours here). There's no way to know who would be the bigger draw at Coachella unless they played at the same time. I would be at the Blur, but I imagine 65% of the Coachella crowd would be KROQ'n it on over to The Killers.
Slayer has a huge fanbase in the US. Blur does not. Splitting hairs with Phoenix though I think. I think Slayer could totally headline any fest now if given the opportunity. They completely destroyed last year during that mayhem tour. quacking speakers set up as big crosses bleeding out fire now and shiz. 1000000x better than Metallica live. It's just a matter of big fests like Coachella, Lolla, ACL don't want them there because of the crowd they'd draw and metal just isn't as popular in the US as it used to be.
So if Blur shares the top line, who wins the bet? Because that is what I think is going to happen.

Just looking out for mjb here, and I have no idea at all if this is the case, but has it been leaked/confirmed in the Coach private threads? I don't know if he's aware about these.
Just to clarify...I was referring to "top line" meaning the headliners of each day. And if you have no connections, are you just fucking with us with the Macca stuff?

That's sort of his problem for taking the bet, though, isn't it? It's why I generally don't bet - I always think the other person knows something I don't.

I just want to say that it really irritates me for some reason that there are people on this forum who either do not know Blur at all or are only familiar with them from "Song 2." I have no idea why that bothers me so much or that my irritation with this is rational, but that really gets under my skin. I feel like everyone who posts here should at least know who they are.

Well yeah, but in this case, there was a stipulation regarding inside information. Being a member of a private thread is something that the general public does not have access to.

Where would I have heard of them before?
Well, the only way it would make sense for you not to have heard of them is if you are 21 or under. I didn't take that into consideration. For anyone who was a teenager in the 90s, you have no excuse. But if you're younger it makes more sense.

I honestly have not heard them. At best, I may recognize a song, but didn't know who performed it.

Yeah, I was going to say that I really wouldn't expect some of our younger members to be familiar with blur unless they've been into music seriously for well over a decade. Blur was on haitus the whole time during gorillaz and haven't really been blowing up in the US since their reunion.

One last thing about Blur and then I'll shut up. I think Blur as a headliner at a major US festival would not go over too well. I'm not saying they can't headline, but it's not the best idea. The sad fact is they never caught on with a U.S. audience except for music nerds who seek out good music. Most people here that are old enough do know them for either "Song 2" or the "Coffe & TV" music video, but that's about it. I think their headlining would fall flat here.

I don't think them headlining Coachella would fall flat at all. Also I think some of you may be forgetting that Coach has opposed headliners. So even if someone isn't cool enough to love "The Blur", they won't be too mad because there's other shit going on anyway.
