How are they underrated, though? I know tons of people who love them, from many age groups...
You hang out with better people then. I never hear them talked about at all, none of their albums or songs appear on any cool, retro lists and when I put them on when other people are around I invariably get asked "is this Lynyrd Skynyrd?" or some equally stupid question.
Alright... I suppose the term is subjective. I just know they were loved by the music press, have a devout following, and were pretty hip at the time of their peak
Perhaps time underrated them or something? It's like Tom said, your average listener has no clue who they are at this point, while bands like Lynyrd Skynyrd, Allman Brothers, etc. are pretty much universally known.
It's crazy to think that people today don't even know who they are, especially if they're big music people, but you're probably right about the over time thing.
