The theory is that you are not supposed to spoil it. It mostly applies to those @ss hats that tailgate around you blaring the music you are about to see. Like when you hear One Big Holiday 5 times before you even get into the venue to see MMJ. I've just lived by the rule since I was about 16.
This reminds of something. One time I went to a Mastodon show and I noticed a couple people next to me at the bar had a Mastodon shirt on. I snickered to myself, but then I turned around, and I think about 90% of the people there had a Mastodon shirt on. It was like some kind of bizarro alternate universe. I guess Metal lives by its own rules.
Well, I get the not spoiling aspect of that as far as a few hours before the show goes, as well as the: "WE GET IT, you like X band that you are about to see", but it seems arbitrary to set the entire day of the show aside. Basically, if I haven't recently listened to someone I'm going to see, I'll throw on their stuff to have a refresher/reminder of what I like of theirs, and what I should look forward to. I do that pretty regularly.
Have only seen Rush once in 2005, but I don't remember it being nearly as much...maybe 50%. What I did not expect is so many people smoking ze reefer at that Rush show. It seemed like everyone out on the lawn at Lakewood was smoking.
Uh, have you ever listened to 2112, By-Tor and the Snow Dog, La Villa Strangiato or Cygnus X-1 either Book 1 or Book 2?

It would have made all the sense in the world to me had that show been in the 70s or 80s, but in 2005? I guess I was just expecting the majority of rush fans to be nerds with jobs in which they're subject to random drug tests. Maybe it was just that show/venue.
