You East Coast folks have no idea what you're complaining about. Come to the West where you can drive all-day in one state. One barren, boring state. New Mexico, Texas, Oklahoma, and inland California are all worse than WI or PA.

Come on, it takes A FULL HOUR for me to drive out of the state in most directions. AN HOUR.
Welcome back Bonz, but I do not find it strange that your presence being requested in the Orgy thread and then you showing up, like it was the quacking Bonzai Bat Signal.

One of my uncles lived out West for most of his adult life. He was a big fan of traveling by bus. He repeatedly told me growing up that Texas was the worst to drive across when he was making the journey back home. He said it felt like it took days and nothing ever happened.

It quite literally can, going across East/West can be 12+ hours on a greyhound it probably would be a good bit more

I'll take a long, barren drive to bumper to bumper stop and go traffic for hours on end with no discernible purpose. Pennsylvania's roads have not improved at all while under constant construction.

the worst drive of my life was moving from memphis to phoenix. arkansas>oklahoma>texas>new mexico all on I40 in a uhaul towing my jeep. it was pretty bad. NM is really pretty though once you get near albuqurque, and then AZ at least has some nice mountains up north.
I will say though, it's neat to say that I have driven every mile of I40 at some point in my life.

Ya Northern New Mexico isn't bad at all, but taking 10 to 25 is pretty brutal from about Wilcox, AZ until past Albuquerque
We were warned when we went out to the national championship game that the drive from Las Vegas to Phoenix was utter boredom. Thing is, none of us southerners had been out there before, so we loved it. Right Siggy?

Comparatively that drive isn't too bad. The scenery changes quicker when you go North/South so it keeps it more interesting.

They've improved the quality of the turnpike in certain places, and there is a steak n shake at the east bound Plaza at Midway (mm147).
The PA turnpike is boring but not alone in that regard. It's the combo of boredom, random traffic (especially getting thru breezewood), and caravanning tractor trailers that makes it awful for me, along with the number of times I have to do it. I know the freaking road like the back of my left hand.
I've learned after living in richmond that people on the east coast, especially the northern half, have little-to-no grasp on how spread out the US is west of the mississippi.
my boyfriend was *mind blown* that it take 6 hours to cross the state of pennsylvania and any drive longer than ~2.5 hours to him is insanely long.

I've had many visitors think San Francisco is in play for a day trip from San Diego. No way Jose, unless that quick jaunt entails atleast 17 hours drive time....

When we moved from Atlanta to Carson City, that was pretty much the middle of our route. I actually loved most of that drive, but (1) we were in a car pulling a small U-Haul trailer, not in a U-Haul pulling a car; (2) my husband drove the entire way; and (3) we were able to take our time, so we only drove about 8 or 9 hours a day. The worst of the drive was going through California (it was December/January, so we didn't want to drive through the mountains in a Hyundai pulling a U-Haul trailer; in retrospect, we probably could have hit Las Vegas and come up the 95 and been fine). Besides just being tired because it was the last couple of days of the drive, the roads were pretty terrible.

In Rhode Island, any drive over 30 minutes is an annoyance and over an hour is insanely long.

I'm not super keen on long road trips, but I would much rather feel like I have the ability to explore/go somewhere. just thinking about staying within a 30 minute radius makes me feel antsy & trapped.

Kansas is the fucking worst.
Driving diagonally across IL (Chicago to Hannibal) is pretty boring too.

Well, do keep in mind, this is the smallest state in the country (roughly 30 miles by 50) and 60% of the state lives in/near one city.
I live in the northern part of the state, where I can get to Connecticut to the west in 20 minutes and Massachusetts to the east in 20 minutes.

yeah, uhaul tells you it's trucks can pull a car no problem. but that thing took minutes to get up to speed. merging onto the interstate was a nightmare. I wanted to bring my motorcycle too, and couldn't fit that in a small trailer with all my shiz that my jeep could still pull, so I went the other way round. Shoulda just sold the damn motorcycle though, I'm not allowed to ride it anymore and it's been sitting in the garage so long I need to rebuild the carbs and replace all the fuel lines to get it running again.

I can't even fathom driving a U-Haul truck. When we did the move to Carson City, we did one of the ABF containers (like Pods, but they are technically a freight company instead of a moving company, so it's much cheaper and much more likely your stuff will be damaged), so we only needed the little trailer for things we were worried about getting damaged in the container. Every other move we've done where we've had a U-Haul, my husband has driven it because I'm way too chicken.

my hope is to move back east at some point, and mrs. snowman and I decided we are gonna sell off a bunch of stuff and then hire a company/pods/etc to move all the rest. moving is such a PITA.

Same here. I'm currently half-heartedly looking for jobs in the southeast, and my husband and I have talked about selling as much as we can before moving if I find something.

Try living in Juneau, Alaska. The only way in and out is by boat or plane. The road literally just stops in both directions at the edge of town. Living there is the most trapped I've ever felt in my life, it was awful.

I drove a uhaul with my car on a hitch behind us the entire way from Columbus to Austin and was terrified. But it actually wasn't too bad.

I kind of have anxiety issues related to driving anyway, so the idea of driving something really big or pulling something behind me is a nightmare to me.
For the record, I was willing to do my share of driving on the move from Atlanta to Carson City, but Josh took pity on me and never asked (he did make me drive everywhere we went for like a month after we got to CC though). For the CC to LV move, I was not willing to drive the truck, and one of us had to drive the car anyway because we were traveling with two dogs, so towing the car wasn't really an option.
