I was at a restaurant last night where the waitress told the person I was eating with to stop yawning in a nice but direct way. I understand yawning is contagious and this lady is at work and needs to be alert but I also thought it was strange to be calling someone out when you are relying on that person to tip.
So I realize the server/patron aspect of this adds another layer, but in normal social situations is it appropriate or rude to ask someone to stop yawning?
Rude. I've never thought of doing that in my life. I might throw small wads of paper in your mouth while you're yawning, but that'd be the extent of it.

If I see one more person post on facebook about how awesome Dubya was, how much they miss him & wish he was still President, I am going to throw my computer out the door.

I am such a better person than my dog. When he tells me he is hungry I feed him. On the other hand, when I tell him I am hungry, he just looks at me. What a lazy bastard.

Aren't we all just servants to our pets? Don't feel bad. It's a common misconception that we are actually the ones in charge.
Evolution of the record industry: 1. Pay a lot 2. Pay a little 3. Pay anything 4. OK fine, just pay us once a month plz! 5. F*ck you, now you own a U2 album

Your dog is probably on a canine festival message board right now telling people "I am such a better dog than my person.".

I can't talk about politics with any of my school friends because they're all raging conservatives. Like, I mentioned the Affordable Care Act once last semester and got shouted at for being a socialist. Which kinda blew my mind because, seeing as we're all in culinary school hoping to be successful in the food service industry, they'd be interested in being able to have affordable health insurance. Which is something the food service industry is seriously lacking.

Problem solved.
I call that the silent shit list! Lately though, I've just been unfriending people who post offensively ignorant things (actually just did this last night with someone I know only through inforoo). It got to a point where I forgot I was "friends" with a lot of these people and I realized I don't really want to be sharing my personal life/thoughts with hateful folks.

I've purged most of the conservatives off my friends list. It's to the point where I only have two family members, my cousins in Oregon, left. I've told several others, including my own grandmother, never to add me - over political differences and/or profanity laced tirades.
I also defriended a guy because he was basically a troll, where Democrats could do no wrong and Republicans were of the devil. Basically the same closed minded hateful thinking but in the other direction.

Is there a getting into metal or metal for beginners thread?
sang_xcx does make a good suggestion for starters. Is there a particular reason/band that has sparked your interest because it would be easier to throw some bands your way if people had a baseline for you.
Is there a getting into metal or metal for beginners thread?
Follow Dave's suggestion and visit the metal thread. However, that is largely for people already into metal and ends up with a lot of the Pitchfork-approved-one-metal-album-is-beloved-per-year album. To truly start in metal, you should go back to the beginning with, say, Led Zeppelin and then run through glam (Motley Crue, Poison, Ratt), get to death and black, look to the Scandinavians, then decide if you like the growling vocals, the D&D lyrics, the guitar work, etc. to branch off properly. So if you really want to start at the beginning - go from Black Sabbath to Deep Purple and Dio and Rainbow and Judas Priest and then you'll get to the one metal band that binds them all - Iron Maiden. Listen to the Maiden albums Powerslave and Number of the Beast, tell me what you think and I'll be able to advise you from there.

What a surprise that this guy would suggest you listen to old music.

Well played, sir!
I did say just to start there. I think it's fair to say I am that rare breed that can help you with the old people's music but also get you up to speed with what the kids are listening to these days.

Oh, you're totally right if that is the route that he wants to go. I just can't pass up an opportunity to take advantage of an old joke at your expense.
