JEFF the Brotherhood and Cheer Up Charlie Daniels are two local Nashville bands. JEFF is getting some national attention now; I've personally never seen them live but they are apparently pretty good.
They are the cafe acts, not really supposed to be big names or anything. There is something awesome about relaxing in the Troo Music Lounge and listening to an act you have never heard of, but is on the cusp of getting big (maybe). I saw Frontier Ruckus last year as a cafe act and my band ended up opening for them when the toured through Wilmington this year.
saw Sallie Ford and the Sound Outside open for Langhorne Slim<Avetts at the Fox on New Years Day 2010. Short set but enjoyable, albeit a bit twangy country for my preference.
Greensky Bluegrass opened up for Cornmeal a few months back and were pretty solid. Definitely worth checking out if there's nothing else going on.
I've also seen Civil Twilight who put on a really good show and I'm surprised they're not a lot bigger than they are. They're not really my style as I think they sound too much like Coldplay, but they are definitely talented. (I saw them because it was a radio promotion $1.03 for admission and I was on a work trip so had nothing else to do that night).

What band are you in man? I go to school at UNCW and check out the soapbox a lot.

I saw Sally Ford open for the Avetts in Knoxville. They put on a good show despite seeming a little overwhelmed by playing to a near sold out Tennessee Theatre. Lionize opened up for Clutch one time I saw them. They might be an alternative for people who want some more reggae though they're not pure reggae. I also saw Dave Mayfield Parade in front of the Avetts at a different show. He's a good showman.

I strongly recommend Gary Clarke Jr. Best of the Cafe acts by far. That guy has some awesome energy and is a damn fine guitarist. He was at the Crossroads Festival in Chicago last year and tore it up. Real excited about this
JEFF was on SPIN mag's must hear acts of sxsw 2011 so they must be really trending upwards. Not a bad sound - checking them out as we speak. I've heard of The Kopecky Family Band also - very nice full folk rock sound there.
Also, quick question - This will be my first Bonnaroo experience, when do the cafe acts play in general? Is it throughout the day or generally earlier in the day so as not to conflict with the bigger stage/tent acts?

I think there's a lot to check out here: Gary Clark Jr., Greensky, The Band of Heathens, The Black Box Revelation, just to name a few acts. For those who have not been to roo before, don't sleep on the cafe artists. The Constellations put on one of my favorite shows last year.
I can't make it this year, but I highly recommend checking out J Roddy Walston and the Business if you are. A lot of fun piano driven southern rock. And J Roddy has cool hair.
