Juggs, if you like Basement Jaxx's catalog more than Daft Punk's, that's your call, but you're talking out of your ass when saying they're just as "relevant" or "vital" as DP.
Disagree. Daft Punk gets by on Pitchfork-fueled hipster adulation, because they're seen as "cool" by the idiot masses since they tour with a totes amazing light show, brah.
Meanwhile, among people who actually enjoy electronica/house, Basement Jaxx would win, hands down. Daft Punk may be a "bigger" name, but it's kind of like how Kings of Leon is a bigger name than My Morning Jacket. Among people who really know, MMJ makes more vital, interesting, relevant music. See what I'm saying?
Oh, and:
Rooty > Discovery Remedy > Homework Kish Kash/Crazy Itch Radio/Scars > Human After All/Tron
(ducking and covering)
Great post, and totally agree that this is a perception issue. Folks sleeping on Basement Jaxx are making a mistake.
Pitchfork (as well as 80% of the people who now talk about them) started caring about Daft Punk in 2007.
Uhh, I'm 26 and I can barely remember a time when Daft Punk wasn't well known and relevant. Not sure why most people wouldn't care until 2007.
yeah, i think they got pretty huge back in '97 with "Around the World" and "Da Funk," both of which they were nominated for Grammy's for. This was however long before Pitchfork existed.
picture it - 1996. you're in worcester MA, its 1 am on a sunday night and amped is on the tv.
all of a sudden the sickest beat is playing coming out of the tv and the corresponding image is a twisted looking dog walking around nyc with a boombox.

"Hey Peter Frampton! Do you like toast too? Yes, as do I. It is warm and crispy, and a perfect place for jelly to lay. Now stay the hell away from me Frampton, I ain’t got sh*t to say to you!"
"Walk tall, kick ass, learn to speak Arabic, love music and never forget you come from a long line of truth seekers, lovers and warriors" - Hunter S. Thompson
Calling me out for being a jerk doesn't make that live performance of Basement Jaxx any better. If I wanted to hear someone scream over a recorded track of their song during a live performance, I'd go to a Stone Temple Pilots concert.
Anyways...I have some inside information for you guys: Daft Punk is playing at my house. My house.
Oh, I'm sorry r (or is it R?)...here, let me find you a better joke involving robots. Ah ha! Here we are:
Two friends meet in the office of one of them, a notorious techo-geek.
"Hey, bud, how are ya?"
"I'm good. Congratulations, that new secretary of yours is beautiful!"
"Well, I'm glad you like her. Believe it or not, she's a robot!
"No way, how could that be?"
"Way! She's the latest model from Japan. Lemme tell you how she works. If you squeeze her left tit, she takes dictation. If you squeeze her right tit, she types a letter. And that's not all, she can have sex, too!"
"Holy shit! You're kidding, right?"
"No, she's something, huh? Tell you what, you can even borrow her"
So, his friend takes her into the restroom and is in there with her for a while. Suddenly, he hears him screaming "Eeeeyaaaaa! Heeelp" Ooooooh! Aaaaaaah! Eeeeeeeeeeeaaargghhhh!"
The guy says, "Shit! I forgot to tell him her ass is a pencil sharpener!"
