it's NOT REM...I just called the office of Bertis Downs in Athens. "we're not playing Bonnaroo"
I told her it was coming from RS, she then put me on hold. again, "REM isn't playing Bonnaroo"
if you're not playing then we can rule out REM. man, this saturday stuff is getting me hyped because i already love the rest of the way all this stuff with the line up is shaking out so far.
even if it is true, that doesnt mean they wont be there. they arent gonna tell some random person calling in that they are indeed headlining the biggest fest in the country. their contracts usually say they arent allowed to announce it till the its released by bonnaroo.

god i hope its not Eminem solo... hes still one of my all-time favorite rappers but his new material is SO bad and ive heard his shows lately have been very lackluster performances. pretty upsetting setlist too...
theres about 7/8 good songs in there... which is so sad considering how deep Shady's catalogue is. TBH i probably wouldnt even watch this show if it were at Roo...
That is one ugly setlist.
i know
heres a setlist from October of 2000. if we got THIS show, it would likely be the performance of the weekend. but unfortunately this isnt what we'd get...

i bet saturday is black eyed peas followed by u2. but i'm not talking black eyed peas at like 6 pm. probably like how they did it in 08 with jack johnson and pearl jam.
maybe something like:
what stage
black eyed peas (8:00/8:30) u2 (10:30/11:00)
which stage
massive attack (2:00/3:00?)
i know nobody wants black eyed peas or u2 but it would be the big names and headliner that would bring in the randoms. i'm sure one of bonnaroo's goals every year is to get huge acts that don't appeal to all us regulars and bring in people who might not normally come.
Ok if it's not REM, I guess it could be the Stones. But The Stones into a hip-hop act? That doesn't sound right either.
the thing that keeps me off the stones is the "don't get your hopes up" we're hearing from literally everyone who knows something. but stones in to a hip/hop headliner makes sense. stones are soul/r&b influenced, and make way more sense than say, Neil Young. and Stones make sense with it taking time to negotiate. just don't go with the get your hopes up. that's why i'm ruling them out and saying Muse, or John Mayer, or even someone else who is along that spectrum of popularity (90's rock/00's rock-pop)
The fact that the RHCP's specifically mentioned Bonnaroo when they were ruling out festivals makes me worried that they ARE playing. A little reverse psychology, maybe?
Was thinkning the same thing...Chad Smith wasn't even asked, he just blurted out "we arent playing Bonnaroo"

I don't know. Neil Young is notoriously difficult to negotiate as a headliner. I heard they came close to landing him last year but then he did the acoustic tour and sort of ruined the deal.

BEP, U2?! That's an awfully cruel thing for roo to do.

Think there's any chance it would be at least somewhat closer to that since it's a festival instead of a normal show?
I'm trying to be optimistic about it, because I want him there. But not with that first setlist.
I guess The Stones are okay for the "lower your expectations" headliner. I saw them about 13 years ago and it wasn't a very good show. Not awful but not great either.
No matter what, I'm content with Friday night, so Saturday and Sunday can still suck, and I will be cool.

yes but it would be huge ticket seller - not that they need help - but it would also bring in the types who normally don't attend these things

I don't know. Neil Young is notoriously difficult to negotiate as a headliner.
but to go from him in to a hip-hop headliner makes no sense. never say never though. i'm only ruling him out for that reason. i think someone across the pond would be harder to negotiate with so that's why i went with Muse. they stay within the realm of realism and are far enough way to take extra time to deal with. it could literally be a bunch of bands though i suppose and NY is definitely in the mix.
That's a really good call. Big band. Massive popularity. Has not played Bonnaroo. Has not been discussed yet as the Saturday headliner. I believe they are working on a new album.

did BD rule out u2? hadn't heard that. i just keep thinking they'll be playing because they'll be in the states, tour gap, yada yada yada. just seems like they don't play many shows over here. at least up by me.

it's their name man. not whether they put on a great show still.

Just because you had a mediocre time at a Rolling Stones show 13 years ago doesn't mean they're a lackluster headliner. The Rolling Stones are still The Rolling Stones. They may not be what they once were, but the fact of who they are doesn't change.
This is the first message board I've ever been on, the only reason I joined is because I love Bonnaroo and wanted to read and talk about it all year long.

Those are precisely the reasons as to why I was curious if they had been ruled out or not.....

okay, so for saturday i'm thinking:
neil young the who rolling stones muse coldplay
hip hop act
black eyed peas dre with or without eminem or the other way around legend with or without the roots or other way around fish stick lover a tribe called quest
but to go from him in to a hip-hop headliner makes no sense. never say never though. i'm only ruling him out for that reason. i think someone across the pond would be harder to negotiate with so that's why i went with Muse. they stay within the realm of realism and are far enough way to take extra time to deal with. it could literally be a bunch of bands though i suppose and NY is definitely in the mix.
I don't think Superfly thinks like that. For example, last year they went from The National > Michael Franti, The Black Keys > Kid Cudi/B.o.B., The Avett Brothers > Weezer, Ween > Phoenix.
Or more famously, Pearl Jam > Kanye West in 08
Sometimes you just slot acts when you can and it doesn't make sense in terms of the crowd each act draws. That's why you counter program and provide a variety of acts across a festival.
I guess my main issue is that if difficulty of booking is a factor as to why you think it might be the Stones over Neil Young, I'm just telling you Neil Young is more notorious for being a total flake than the Stones are.

No way "The Stones" are in the vein of lower your expectations... They're one of the biggest bands in the world.

It just depends on what your definition of a good time at a show is... and yes, I agree, they are still The Rolling Stones. I'm not disputing that. Some people will probably really enjoy the show.
