Share your offbeat Netflix choices. I'm a huge fan of independent and foreign films, (as well as old movies) and happy to know that many of my favorites are here. $10a month is not at all bad for all the streaming movies you can watch, and one DVD video at a time.
starting to catch up on some stuff I've loved and haven't seen in years.....
last night was "Being There" with Peter Sellers and Shirley MacLaine. (circa 1979)
I know lots of you weren't even born yet, but this is a good one.
I love scifi too...have any of you seen "Skyline"....its supposed to be really good.

When I first opened my Netflix account I started with some classic Lynch and Jarmusch. Down By Law, Night On Earth and Blue Velvet are some of my favorites. The early Bonnaroo DVDs are good also. I just finished watching the Joe Strummer doc, which was nice.

If you're looking for a winter horror flick, go with Dead Snow. Maybe not the best but one you're unlikely to stumble across unless you're looking for it.
Quite a few MST3K episodes up on the instant, as well as some of my favorite movies:
The Ruling Class (Peter O'Toole thinks he's Jesus) Five Easy Pieces (Classic drama with Jack Nicholson and Karen Black... fantastic movie.) tons of other great stuff on there, you just have to dig. Those two movies, though, are ones I definitely recommend... Five Easy Pieces is a bit more well known, but Ruling Class is something totally unique and special so I won't give too much away about it.

Dead Snow is insanely fun. Definitely worth a watch.
I've been watching This American Life, which is up on instant. It's excellent. Whether you're a fan of the radio show or have never heard of it, it's well worth your time
"Nymphomaniacs in Dinosaur Hell". No, it's not porn... I don't even think there was nudity. But it's worth a watch for the cheesy dinosaur-toy-like fighting. Not sure if it's on instant viewing anymore, but it was about a year ago.

The trailer for that movie is so funny. Really, all the Troma movies are pretty good.

I second Jiro Dreams of Sushi. It's an amazing documentary.
Also Tucker & Dale vs. Evil, House of Cards, Brick, and Moon. I feel like none of those get the love the deserve. There are lots more. I'll be posting in this thread a lot.

Moon is the shiz! Unfortunately it's not on streaming last I checked.
Pig Hunt is allot of fun, stupid yeah, but anything starring Les Claypool (bit part really but still) and features his music I'm game for. If you don't mind subtitles Rare Exports: A Christmas Tale and Troll Hunter are F&%!NG AWESOME! And I think that one of the best and most super fascinating documentaries I've ever seen is The Ambassador. All available via streaming. Oh and if you like scary movies (and don't mind subtitles) the original version of Shutter (the Philippines version) is a genuinely scary movie. That one stuck with me for a few days. I love ghost stories!
EDIT: I didn't think Insidious was too shabby a ghost flick either. Got a little more campy than I like at the end but still a movie I'd recommend. If anyone could point me to some lesser known Sci-Fi on streaming I'd really appreciate it .
House of Cards is heavily flawed but I still enjoyed it. It tries to be great but isn't, but I still had fun with it.
Just watched Oldboy, which apparently everybody but me has seen. Fantastic Korean "vengeance" flick. Unfortunately only the dubbed version is available on Netflix, I think I'd enjoy the subtitled version much more. Dubbed dialogue makes everything sound ridiculous. Having said that I enjoyed the movie so much I'll probably buy the subtitled version just to watch it again, and I don't rewatch many movies.
Jiro Dreams of Sushi is a beautiful documentary. Great theme of hard work, obsession, and dedication to one's craft.
I can also recommend "The Imposter", fascinating stuff regarding a missing boy from Texas who shows up years later in Spain, and is reunited with his family.
All the Classic Albums documentaries are great. DSOTM is a must see for fans of rock music, as is Aja and Transformer.
Fringe is also fun, you have to suspend your disbelief plenty but its a wild ride, think a more modern X-Files on acid.
Of course the first two seasons of Portlandia are streaming, brilliant comedy if you haven't seen it.
Freaks and Geeks. If you haven't watched it you must. The birth of the Apatow crew, and probably the best thing they've ever done.
The Comedians of Comedy: The Movie. If you love stand-up and like to hear stories of the craft you'll love this. Maria Bamford, Patton Oswalt, Brian Posehn, and Galifinakis. Its a tour documentary from 2004.
Following Sean is a really cool documentary about a boy who grew up with super liberal parents during the hey day of Haight Ashbury. The film maker compares and contrasts Sean's upbringing to his own upbringing, whose parents were by no means conservative but certainly more traditional than Sean's.

Well that's weird...There are 3 movies in the Vengeance Trilogy by Park Wook Chan and I watched Sympathy for Mr Vengeance via streaming and it was subtitled as was Sympathy for Lady Vengeance. I'd already seen Oldboy. YOU MUST check out Thirst by the same direcotor. It's a vampire flick and maybe the best vampire flick I've EVER seen. Brutal and brilliant and also streaming.
I can also recommend "The Imposter", fascinating stuff regarding a missing boy from Texas who shows up years later in Spain, and is reunited with his family. ....(snipped, read the post)... Always Sunny, yup.
All excellent suggestions! Impostor is crazy! I've seen every Sunny in Philli at least twice and a significant number of them 4, 5, 15 times. God I love that show !
I never understand people who say there's nothing good on Netflix Instant. They are either lazy or have poor taste. Tons of great docs. Tons of great shows, old and new. Tons of great classic films.
I have 400+ titles in my instant queue. Everything from Troma to Billy Wilder to Top 50 WWE Superstars to Rocko's Modern Life to Werner Herzog docs to Cosmos with Carl Sagan.
Just finished How To Survive A Plague, which was excellent and nearly moved me to tears a couple times (a rare feat.)
Also finished Twin Peaks today, which was a bummer. Loved the show, but it sucks that it just ends unfinished with a ton of loose ends. That being said, the Black Lodge scene in the last episode was incredible.
Finished up all four seasons of Parks & Rec, all of which were hilarious.
Working my way through the new Battlestar Galactica, quite possibly the only great thing to ever come from the Sci-Fi network.

I watched the entire BG series (reboot) on Netflix over the course of 2 weekends, so good. I still catch myself saying "frakking" on occasion.

probably my favorite show ever. I never get tired of watching and literally laugh out loud at every episode. I think one of my faves (aside from Dayman and "Kitten Mittons") is "Dennis and Dee Go on Welfare". soooo good.
"Hi. I'm a recovering crack head. This is my retarded sister that I take care of. I'd like some welfare, please."
oh and the cats in the wall! or Charlie rules the world. they're all hilarious.

I had to laugh when I read this. I wasn't too interested in Battlestar because I'd seen the original series and because it was a Sci-Fi networks creation. BUT there was a skit on an episode of Portlandia regarding a couple accidentally getting the wrong movie from Netflix (Battlestar Gallactica) and getting super addicted to it. I just had to watch it after that and...damn if it wasn't funny because it's true! I watched that shit for like 12 hours straight at a time!

Been watching it with my mom and we regularly wind up watching two or three episodes at a time

I loved House of Cards and Jiro Dreams of Sushi. Netflix is great if, like me, you enjoy documentaries. I also recommend Mansome, with Jason Bateman and Will Arnett.
