This is a question that comes up for me pretty regularly. What do you give a friend to listen to that only listens to radio hits?
You've got one chance to steer them to something good, so what do you choose? Do you try to get something they'd like but probably not know yet? Or do you try to get them into something classic?
Is there a specific album would you choose?
I'm actually in the midst of one of these situations now. ??? ??? ???

If he/she listens to rock on the radio, get him/her The Clash's London Calling.
If he/she listens to hip-hop on the radio, get him/her Outkast's Stankonia.
If he/she listens to both, get her/him both The Clash's London Calling and Outkast's Stankonia. She/he will enjoy both on a surface level and then maybe start to notice the subtleties that make both albums great and maybe it will get her/him on their way to more stimulating music.
I would say if they are into mainstream radio, try throwing Radiohead's In Rainbows at them. You have to start slow with these Top 40 folks. You give them Mars Volta or Primus and they are going to go running screaming for Britney.

I'm not really planning to argue, but Druid what about In Rainbows would make that your Radiohead of choice? I think that one is pretty interesting.
And, in this case, my friend was in a metal band in Russia so I was thinking something a little more off the wall like Death From Above 1979 or maybe The Kills.

Nice. I didnt mean to get this on to a specific person topic. I really just wondered if people have go to albums for introducing people to the wide world of excellent music that doesnt get the radio play it deserves.
In this case she, tends to like pop/metal/electronic but doesnt know much music that isnt Russian. It's like a blank slate!
Sounds to me like it's actually YOUR opportunity to learn about popular and underground music from Russia. And while you're at it, pass some Slavic recommendations my way.
