We're all a mess of paradoxes. Believing in things we know can't be true. We walk around carrying feelings too complicated and contradictory to express. But when it all becomes too big, and words aren't enough to help get it all out, there's always music.

Reading through this thread I'm surprised no one mentioned U2. I'm not a U2 fan myself, but just going along the lines of there world wide relevance factor.. eh?
Patrick always looks really awkward and I love it, haha. I wasn't aware until just now that they canceled their New Zealand/Australian tour, apparently last year wore them down :/
Akron/Family is amazing, their show I saw last year at Florida State blew me away at what three guys could be capable on stage.
Now at the topic at hand. If we are talking about bands, I'll reiterate, its Black Sabbath. By far. In the metal world/community, they are the Beatles in a sense, due to them being the pioneers of the genre and influencing almost every sub-genre of it.
Now if we are talking about artists, then yes, no question its Michael Jackson. Only artist that could rival The Beatles in worldwide popularity.

How the hell is this 6 pages and the only mention of The Velvet Underground is a picture on the first page? Probably not the best since The Beatles, but better than 95% of what's been suggested.
this is such a tough question to answer bc i dont think you can count bands that were around when The Beatles were.. i would have to consider Led Zeppelin and Pink Floyd.. i dont think any bands from the 80's should be in the conversation bc good songwriting seemed to be dead in the 80s.. the 90s had Nirvana and Radiohead.. 2000s-present, i know i might get some back lash but I think you have to consider Arcade Fire bc they brought back meaningful songwriting which which had been gone for while and still in a sense is.. plus the musicianship is incredible.. Also The White Stripes bc they brought back blues and they did it in the biggest way possible bc in the process they brought back rock to its roots... all in all IMO this is the answer:
1. Led Zeppelin 2. Pink Floyd 3. Radiohead 4. The White Stripes 5. Arcade Fire

I'd have been harping on this way more if they were actually after the Beatles.
My interpretation for this topic boils down to songwriting skills, innovation and the size of the band's catalog. I think that leaves Springsteen, U2, R.E.M. and Radiohead in the mix. Wilco is also a possibility. Maybe Green Day too?
