Bends/OKC was the peak of brilliance, as far as the best music they put out, so yes, the mid-late 90s was the creative peak. I just think they reached a totally different level as a band in the early 00s... it's like, they became more bold, started taking more risks, gained a ton of confidence, expanded upon their already rabid fanbase, and just became this beast of a band ; this undeniable force, they turned into more than our generation's Pink Floyd or anything.
Arguably the top band in the world over the past decade.
I have to go with Phish musically they are unparalleled in their ability to blend pop, rock, and psychedelic music. However not everyone likes them (also true of the Beatles), to me though they are the clear winner. They also once played The White Album for Halloween.

no argument about how great they are. they are definitely the best band of our time. and i would probably list them in both decades. my disagreement was with the fact that the 00's stuff outweighs the greatness of ok computer/the bends.
No way is the Bends era of songwriting part of Radiohead's peak. Sorry sang.
Songwriting wise, true. But it's one of their best overall efforts as an album. The companion pieces ( Bends & OKC) are among the most important and influential back to back releases in history.
Phish has such great songwriting. How could you not rank them as the second best band since 1970?
Waste Back On The Train Esther etc...
Some of their songwriting is silly, but lets be fair Why Don't We Do It In The Road, Benefit of Mr Kite etc... are also pretty shining examples of silly.

ok, so long as you didn't actually mean that, I won't have to spit at your face.
Phish is definitely a contender, and of course it has nothing to do with their songwriting (the thread title is best band since the Beatles, not best songwriter).

Without cheap jokes to insult bands other people like, what do I have?
I'm feeling the same thing. I picked up ODDSAC on DVD in Asheville and have yet to pop it in. Tonight may be the night, after burning through half of their discography.
1. Radiohead 2. Outkast 3. Wilco 4. Arcade Fire 5. Kanye West 6. Animal Collective
Gap between Radiohead and everyone is big, gap between Outkast, Wilco, Arcade Fire, and Kanye is tight as could be, and gap between Kanye and AnCo is bigger than the gap between Radiohead and Outkast...Kanye may well climb this by the end of the year. That's my opinion. Discuss. Also, greatest artist since the Beatles? Bob Dylan, in the many different musical personalities we've seen from him since The Beatles (please ignore the 80s).
Also, there may be more artists between Kanye and AnCo. Not hating on AnCo, I like their music...just not sure where they'll fit when people look back in this generation of music in 20 years. I think there's a solid chance it'll sound pretty dated, but who's to know...For instance, LCD and Sufjan would even be higher on my contemporary greatness list than AnCo.

Huge gulf between the first three and the last three in my opinion. Kanye's definitely not the second best hip-hop artist ever.
Zapp I reported your AnCo post bc of thread title/response even though I doubt you'd argue that their the best since the Beets.
I actually just read that over there in the Panda Bear thread. I started reading the post I made in that thread, thinking "Oh shit, I said tha....whew. The Beets. Perfect. Hilarious."
My above post is only partly true, and a very small part at that. They're reaaaaally fucking cool, though.

If it's that good I'll have to try and find it somewhere. I haven't really heard anything one way or the other. So if that's the official Zapp recommendation, I'll get it.
Haha I'm not sure it's so much a recommendation. I'm glad I've seen it. There's lots of really cool colorful sequences, and tons of layering images on top of one another to create cool effects. Also really beautiful imagery throughout. I really enjoyed this one part with an overhead shot of a person rowing a boat in the dark, and whenever the oar pulled through the water, light reflected in the ripples, almost giving it the illusion of the oar actually creating light trails. Pretty sweet.
However, I think I enjoyed it more as a listening experience without the images to go along with it, oddly enough. It's just so chaotic at times and really intense. Scary almost. It's one of those things that's blatantly meant for hallucinogens and is really hard to enjoy without them. Looks like it's made its way online, for the record.
We're all a mess of paradoxes. Believing in things we know can't be true. We walk around carrying feelings too complicated and contradictory to express. But when it all becomes too big, and words aren't enough to help get it all out, there's always music.

So where is the line drawn? Songwriting should be considered. Tom Marshall isn't a member of Phish but his songwriting credits are pretty substantial. To me, that put's Phish down a notch from bands like Wilco, where the members have always been the composers.

If I was listing 6 great bands since The Beatles, which I'm sure I've probably done in this thread but am too lazy to look back, I wouldn't include The Stripes. But don't worry I'd put yr boys over AnCo and AF.
