For this to be a gathering of music loving, generally open-minded people, there is so much negative energy voiced around the festival. This year it was mainly geared towards DMB, last year Bruce Springstein, a few years ago Metallica...etc etc.
I completely understand disliking a band to the point where it upsets you that they are present (this, for me, was Bruce), but Bonnaroo is not geared towards one particular type of fan...that's what makes it so great!! I was upset that Bruce was the only act during his time slot last year, but I did not go around ranting about how "Bruce was killing Bonnaroo" and talking about how much Bonnaroo has declined. The fact is...if you don't like it, you don't have to go. Don't ruin the good times of others around you who are actually enjoying the experience.
I happen to love Dave, so this year was my taste of the receiving end of a lot of criticism. I'm used to dealing with that, it comes with being a DMB fan amongst compassionate music fans. However, that negative energy (in my opinion) should be weeded out at festivals. He played the last slot on Sunday night. If you don't want to see him go back to your tent, go check out the dj's playing on the way back, or go home! Don't sit in Centeroo yelling at how much this band sucks and how much Bonnaroo sucks for allowing them to play there. Negative energy is contagious.
If you haven't seen a band perform live, then you aren't very well acquainted with that band. Any avid festival goer knows that a band completely transforms once you see them play live...they become a completely different animal. If you have not seen DMB play live, then your opinion of them holds no weight. I, once, was a hater. Then I was talked into checking them out and I had my mind blown. I was not a huge fan of Jay-Z, but I must say that he put on an electrifying show and he was one of the artists that proved to me most that he deserved to be there.
I think that we should all go into a festival with an open mind and trusting that everyone there has the potential to blow your mind, or else they wouldn't be there. When a particular festival loses that feeling for you, that's when you should stop attending.
Side note: When I was heading back to my camp after Bonnaroo was officially over I had a run-in with one of these contagious parasites I'm referring to. He was actually a DMB fan. He was yelling about how he just had the best experience of his life and going on and on about how much Dave just blew his mind. Shortly after that he wanted a response from the 100 people around about how they felt and he got nothing. He then proceeded to shout "You must all be Bassnectar fans. QUACK YOU!! That's not quackin music!" Blah, blah, blah. Bassnectar happened to be one of my favorite shows of the festival, and being a DMB fan I was highly offended. I do understand that it is fans like that that give certain musicians a bad name. I also understand that when you have a cult-like following, you are going to have fans like that no matter what you do. Either way, I couldn't get that quacker out of my mind the rest of the night. Contagious, I tell ya.
The majority of this ended up being about Dave, because that was my individual experience, but I wanted to more or less express my feeling that we should all respect each other's love for certain musicians...after all, there are 100 other shows you can see in that same weekend that will more than make your trip/ticket/chronic dehydration worthwhile.
Everything I saw was awesome, like it is almost every year. I find the positive energy to be contagious at Bonnaroo. I don't encounter much negative energy.

I'm with you sir, just about everything I saw exceeded my expectations. I must have just been lucky enough to be around the few runts in Manchester this year.
I'm getting some very good examples of what I'm talking about
So you joined this board to tell us we are all jerks because we don't like DMB? I mean this is not happy funtime magic unicorn rainbow board, this is a board where we discuss music what we do and do not like, and how it pertains to Bonnaroo.

I didn't say that at all...don't put words in my mouth. I just don't understand why, if this is indeed a board where "we discuss music what we do and do not like", I can't say talk about DMB and say I dislike Bruce Springstein without being told to shut up. Several people have posted on this thread and simply put an opinion (much appreciated), and several have gone out of their way to make me feel stupid for ever posting my opinion.

For the record you were told to shut up because you joined and immediately started telling us how to talk about music. Not because of your unfortunate musical tastes, the DMB thread has plenty of non negative posts in it.
For the record, you clearly got the wrong message from my post and I apologize for that. It would be much different if I came on YOUR thread and made that same post...but I didn't. I was trying to express an opinion that I thought everyone should respect everyone else's music tastes but it was not well received. Yes, I am new to the forum and I guess it will take a few bashings to understand the correct way to post here.

When you join a board and tell a lot of people you do not know to be respectful it implies that you think we were disrespectful before you arrived to tell us how to behave. That is never going to be well received, and that is why you are getting the hate.

If you could direct me to where I "told a lot of people that they don't know how to be respectful" that'd be great. That'd help me understand you, for sure.
I definitely worded that wrong, I admit. I appreciate what he does and I respect him as a musician, I have just never been able to get into his music. Most people I know that are avid fans grew up listening to him...I did not.

I got from your posts that you were telling everyone on here to be more respectful.
OMG you can find anything on the internet. I just found a pic of someones butt tattooed with a rainbow unicorn with white power and a Nazi symbol. WTF!
I did not post it out of respect for all on the board.

"If you haven't seen a band perform live, then you aren't very well acquainted with that band."
This is a pretty ridiculous statement. I never saw Elvis, Pink Floyd, Led Zeppelin, The Who, The Beatles, Hendrix, and on and on and on. And yet I feel pretty acquainted with these groups.
"I, once, was a hater." This is really all anyone needs to see of this post to tune out. Now that you've seen the light, you can go around telling everybody that they 'just don't get it? Your post is filled with a whole lot of holier-than-thou.
Also, you should not be be surprised at the response to this thread. This board is filled to the brim with people who care very deeply for their music, and by coming in with this attitude of showing us all the light you were asking for the response. How bout next time you're offended by someone's opinion, you tell it TO THAT PERSON. You know, in "real life." That is, as opposed to waiting to anonymously berate them on a forum on the interwebz that they will probably never see.
