Be careful, you guys are about to be slammed for not blowing this lineup.
I'm not slamming the line up, it is just the line up is full of acts that have been touring the U.S. for years. Outside of Stevie, there isn't that once in a lifetime type act on this bill.
eh, i can't really think of many once in a lifetime ACTS ive seen at roo (oysterhead, police, dave and friends), and i've been going since '04. radiohead, tom petty, bruce springsteen, stevie, tool, flips, etc... i have seen all outside of roo. what makes the lineup special are the opportunities for once in a lifetime SETS. like superjams (and this year's lineup is ripe for a great one) and guest appearances (warren haynes playing with...everyone) and longer than usual sets (pearl jam, tom petty) hearing songs for the first time (radiohead) etc... beasically not so much the act but the large stage for something unique to happen for ANY artist.
and i think this lineup has a lot of potential for that. i think there will be a lot of vets who come because its bonnaroo, and thats what they do. and i think there will be a lot of people who come for the first time because of the accessible headliners.

I agree as well. I think this year will be a great one. Lots of good shows and possibilities. and hey, a few less people, while sad, means a better chance at a closer camp site this year!!

Those are the numbers he was talking about!!
Jay-Z is the biggest musician of our generation (possibly ever).
He is bigger than Phish and on the same level as the boss, if he isn't because he is on a higher
Sadly artists are never truly appreciated in their own time. One day you will all come to realize what you are seeing or missing.
I know I am going to catch all kinds of heat for this but yay for freedom of speech! You guys still have that down there right? jk.
I know HOVA isn’t your typical hippie jam band that you would normally find at a music festival like this but give him a chance; he will change your opinion.
Bonnaroo is growing and evolving. If it remained the same festival today as it was when it started then it would seem like a waste of 8 years.

He's definitely on a higher level culturally than Phish, and on a similar one to Bruce, but he's not the one of the best musicians ever. Of this generation maybe, but ever is pushing it.

Jay Z, for his genre, is for lack of a better term one of the "Greats". There is no denying this. But to go so far as to say he's one of the greatest "musicians" ever............hmmm........what instrument does he play? And are we considering the microphone an instrument?
Last Edit: May 18, 2010 19:18:47 GMT -5 by tootsmcgoo - Back to Top
I completely agree that the mic is an instrument. That being said, Jay-Z dominates his particular genre to be sure, and he is an amazing businessman and promoter, but suggesting that he is the greatest musical talent ever is completely ludicrous.
"We're no longer called Sonic Death Monkey. We're on the verge of becoming Kathleen Turner Overdrive, but just for tonight, we are Barry Jive and his Uptown Five. "
If we aren’t then I guess we can write off all the front men from some great bands.
Oh yeah wait…HOVA plays the guitar too! :
Hahaha thats a stretch. I think he plays maybe one chord for all of 5 seconds in that video, and I'm not even sure that thing has the volume on. I can at least agree that yes he is one of the greatest rappers ever, but it stops there. The man is great at what he does.
There are still RV passes available for both GA and VIP. I don't recall in past years this being the case. By now they are usually sold out. I would think that means sales are down.
I did see on the Bonnaroo site that there are only two packages left in Tent City. So that seems to be doing well.
There's just no way to tell, really. Do they ever release ticket sale info after the fact, or is it always an estimate by others?

I think there is a big difference between a "musician" and an "artist". I consider Jay-Z one of the greatest "artists" of all time... but in no way is he a great musician.

Oh did Jay have the biggest millennium party in the WORLD? 85,000+ for Phish at Big Cyprus
Phish has been the highest concert draw for the last decade and a half and were nearly making as much as artists like the Stones and Madonna with $30 tickets!
Phish consistently puts on festivals by themselves with over 50k fans from all over the world, and are almost single-handedly responsible for 'Roo and all other new festival formats.
Yeah Jay has the COMMERCIAL success, but that isn't what Bonnaroo is about.

I bet they didn't set aside much space\tickets since this is a pilot effort. This means they will have more next year, which probably won't bode well for someone...
Weren't tickets in 2002 about $100 less than they are now? Wonder if they'd make more by lowering the cost. Not that I think $250-300 is too much to ask, but I have 7 friends, at least, who aren't going because of the cost.

Lulz sells more albums does not mean bigger than, once Jay Z has his own festival on the Coahchella grounds let me know about it. Not to mention if he is that big of a draw why has Bonnaroo not sold more tickets?

Same here. I don't think $250 or so is unreasonable, but a few of my friends who would deffinitly have the time of their life get hung up on the cost of the ticket. Maybe if they dropped the ticket price a bit they would open up the door for those hold outs to have a great time and see what it's all about.

I would just like to point out that Phish is billed behind Muse at ACL. That is all.

the price sounds high but it's really not at all. I paid half that for one concert last year(Billy Joel/Elton John) and i was in the nose bleeds for 3 hours

That's along the lines of the reasoning I use with them. One of them actually went and saw Jay Z a few months ago and paid $150 for an OK seat. That's half your ticket right there.
Or if he's the biggest artist ever, why is he not first on the lineup?
He's not first because he's not headlining, and he's not headlining simply because the festival organizers don't feel confident he can make it back from England in time for a traditional headlining slot - not because he couldn't hold down a headlining spot if he wanted to. But Jay-Z is massive, and definitely bigger than Phish. I mean, Phish are still big and have a very loyal, almost cult-ish following, but they just don't have the same kind of name recognition or international appeal. Just look at the difference in radio play, album sales, magazine covers, music awards, etc. I'd say both Phish and Jay-Z are big in different ways - one has thousands of fans who will follow them around the country for weeks at a time, and who have developed their own little subculture; the other gets lots of radio play and wins Grammys and headlines festivals over the world. But, if you're strictly asking the question of 'who's more famous', it's Jay-Z, hands down.

Again, all that does is prove they don't have the same commercial success, Muse is pop compared to Phish, believe me when I say more people will travel(out of state) to ACL for Phish than Muse.

In that case Miley Cyrus, Taylor Swift, and Madonna are all bigger than Jay Z as well.
I love Phish, but I totally agree. Attempting to converse with a Phan about other types of music is useless. All they ever want to talk about is how they've been to WAAAY more Phish shows than me.
I thought this was about ticket sales, not a Jay-Z vs. Phish prick waving contest. Juggs I have seen you nearly banhammer people for lesser offenses, and you're in here helping with this one.
