I am listening to A Tribute to Jack Johnson right now, and it's blowing me away...again. Funny this is, this isn't even one of my Top 5-7 Miles Davis records.
So many "essential" records, but my three faves are Milestones, Miles Smiles and Nefertiti.
Here's a top 3 studio and top 3 live: 1. In a Silent Way - this soft, beautiful album might be my favorite of all time. Every note that every musician plays is just perfect. 2. Birth of the Cool - The launch of the Davis - Gil Evans colaborations, an allstar orchestra with killer horn arrangements. 3. On The Corner - some of the nastiest grooves ever recorded. a rhythmic masterpiece.
1. Miles in Tokyo - I love Wayne Shorter and George Coleman, but Miles's only recording with Sam Rivers gives us a feel for what a Miles - Ornette Coleman collab might have sounded like. 2. Live Evil - This album shows Miles and his band's full range of power, still showing touches of his earlier modal jazz work while frequently launching into full on funk and rock and roll. 3. In Person - One of Miles's first concert recordings, with a kickin band and a rhythm section that could really improvise together.

Kind of Blue has always been my favorite. In a Silent Way and Sketches of Spain are great too. I'm not a big fan of tutu, but all the others i've heard are incredible.

Hmmm...
Bitches Brew remains my top, although pretty much any electric Miles that I put on will be my favorite while its playing. Kind of Blue almost seems beyond counting. 'Round About Midnight Seven Steps to Heaven Sketches of Spain
... yeah, that just might be my top 5. But then where do Live-Evil, Miles Smiles, Birth of the Cool and A Tribute to Jack Johnson Go?
I'm pretty much a novice Miles listener- I only have Birth of the Cool, Kind of Blue, and Tribute to Jack Johnson. A cook at my work introduced me to Tribute within the last few months, and it's amaaaazing. The hard thing is finding points of entry when an artist's catalogue is so deep, but it seems like this thread's a good place to work from. Good post, OP.
I was at a party once and the girls kept playing Lady Gaga and I was a little wasted and my buddy hijacked the stereo and put on Bitches Brew... blew my mind. I love that album now.
