the man is a GENIUS. i thought he was to weird to get into at first, but once i actually listened to the stuff from Spiderman of the Rings, its just fucking amazing. Bromst is as good if not better too, probably more accessible than spiderman

Sadly, as his crowds grow, these types of diversions have necessarily suffered. So, don't expect too much of this kind of thing at the huge crowd he will surely have at Bonnaroo, but I'm sure he will more than make up for it somehow.
Don't worry, his big crowd shows seem to have plenty of shenanigans to go around!!!
Just look at the screen in that last video, the "dance pit" is going to be the place to be!!! Can't wait for this set!

let me just say that i saw him at lollapalooza and he said this is the biggest crowd hes ever had and he still did all his crazy crowd stuff and it worked and i had the funnest time ive ever had. i couldnt beleive with the size of his crowd that the crowd stuff worked but it tottally did. especially at bonnaroo with everyone being so open and having so much fun im sure it will work. dont miss this show. seriously.

Ok, I want to preface this by saying that this is just my opinion. I downloaded Bromst and Spiderman of the Rings. I listened to both over the weekend three times each. I find both of the albums interesting but they lack musical substance. It's just a lot of electronic noise. But I am not a big fan of electronic music. Jamtronica is about as far as I usually venture into the realm of electronic music. I get that the shows are fun due to the crowd participation, but the "music" doesn't seem danceable at all. IMO, this is the definition of hipster drivel. That said, I'll probably hit up the show barring conflict, which Im sure something I really want to see will conflict with Dan's show.

lolz at "lacks musical substance" Lots of electronic noise, like when Bob Dylan started playing that noisy electric guitar, or Jimi Hendrix made those mindless squelches, right?

No I def would not compare Dan Deason to Jimi or Bob.

Dan Deacon = Bob Dylan, Jimi Hendrix........... ??? ??? ???
What is this world coming to? I tried Deacon out also. I had the same reaction. But hey, if that is your thing then go for it. But don't expect it to be the next revolution like the electric guitar was. I think that is stretching it A LOT.

NPR recorded the Dan Deacon ensemble last may in DC ( which was his last US show last year I believe.) I've found most of the youtube videos to be poor sound quality, but this live recording is fantastic.
I will give ANYTHING a fair chance but seriously?! The audience experience better be amazing because the "music" is more than lacking. Sorry, just my opinion.

It's definitely not mainstream, or my normal style, but i think it's very interesting and pretty listenable. And the shows are supposed to just be crazy good. So count me as excited.
What is the point of coming into a thread just to say you don't like something?
I have spent the better part of the night tonight reading through threads of most posters doing the same!? It's titled Dan Deacon, not let's talk ONLY about how amazing Dan Deacon is. I came in took a look around and expressed my opinion. That is all. Why would you come into a thread to criticize my post?

IMO, this is the definition of hipster drivel
What does this even mean? to me youre it sounds like youre saying people who listen to Dan Deacon only do so because they think other people wont. i do agree that it is not for everyone, and is a lot of electronic noise, but it is highly composed noise that I think sounds amazing. you said yourself jamtronica is about as far as you venture into this genre, but they mostly suck at electronica honestly. how do you feel about Animal Collective? i feel like theyre similar in that when you first hear them they might really turn you off because they dont really sound like anything youve heard before.

They sound completely different of course. My point is exactly that, they both have an extremely unique style that doesnt sound like anything else which makes it hard to get into immediately. I hated animal collective when i first heard them because they came off as trying to be overly trippy, and i hated dan deacon at first because he came off as trying to be overly weird. now i love both for what they are because they both make incredible music.

The point of comparing him to jimi or bob is not to say that they are similar in sound, but to say that in their day the old and out of touch considered them to be noise and lack musical value. You are now the old and out of touch and consider what you don't understand to be noise. Then you folks are so disingenious you just changed the word from hippie to hipster. You are your parents now.
and i hated dan deacon at first because he came off as trying to be overly weird.
This is where I am stuck on Dan Deacon right now. Will that change I am not sure. The premise of his live SUPER crazy audience participation seems cool, but I don't know yet if that would be enough to keep me hanging out full set. Again just my opinion.
I am very psyched for Dan Deacon. About a month or so ago, when he was on the rumor list for Roo, I went to his GaySpace page to have a listen and didn't listen to anything else at work for the next three days. Something that intrigued me about DD was this "He completed his graduate studies in electro-acoustic and computer music composition. He studied under composer/conductor Joel Thome and Dary John Mizelle." (Wickipedia) Bought Bromst last week at a RECORD STORE (remember those?), am going to Baltimore tonight to see him solo and can't wait for the full ensemble in TN. I love the way he layers his songs. Separately, the "sounds" wouldn't do much for me, but together they are quite remarkable composistions. And it's different. Really different. It's nice to change things up here and there, eh?
As to all the talk about loving and hating him... I'm not a big fan of electronica, djs... but what I am a big fan of is stuff that sounds good when I hear it. I like to think I run the gamut when it comes to listening to music; my mp3 player has everything from miles davis, phish, tortoise, silver jews, pavement/SM&Jicks, Franco, elliot smith, Wes Anderson movie soundtracks, GBV, Zappa, Tribe Called Quest... I could go on. So, I guess what I'm getting at is that I'm not a fan of the label "electronica" "indie" or "jam band", but I am a fan of... bands and musicians. Dan Deacon is one of them.
For what it's worth, I'm also psyched about Tinariwen.

Hippies stood for something and had purpose and meaning to their beliefs.
HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!
I can't believe there are still people that exist today who don't see how completely self-absorbed and pointless the whole "hippie" culture was/is.
Exactly.
I have a professor that grew up in the 60s and he told his class that hippies were just middle-class white kids that tried to emulate the image of what my professor called the Freaks. He says that the people that embodied the true spirit of being free and living on their own were the Freaks. Not hippies.

I consider myself, and most people who know me would call me a hippie. I have a job (winemaker). I have a son in college who is more politically conservative/moderate than me. My wife is a nurse, and more practically grounded, less idealistic than me. Our home is in the forest, quite isolated.
I can fish, pick wild berries and forage for edible mushrooms from the yard and surrounding forest during the season. I could hunt wild game if I wanted, but don't. Our property adjoins the George Washington National Forest, comprised of about a million acres of public forest lands.
I can hike forest trails that come within a 100 yds. from my backdoor. I can kayak either of two rivers, each of which is a 10 minute drive from the house. My next door neighbor has a stable where you can rent horses or riding mules to ride the forest trails. The spring-fed mountain ponds behind our home are an ideal place to take a mid-summer's night skinny dip.
There is a fella who lives in a cabin on the river just a couple miles from me. He appeared in the Woodstock documentary film. He was the guy coming out of the portajohn with a pipe.
I might be guilty of self-absorption, but not more than anybody else on the planet. I would argue the life I live is not pointless. Will soon be baking homemade sourdough bread in our #11 Griswold Dutch-oven on the woodstove, fired with wood from the yard. Life is good, and surprisingly cheap.
Edit: Audioengine 5 speakers are powered, containing the amplifier within the master speaker. They require only house current and an iPod or other mp3 audio source. They are relatively compact and portable, and can blast music outside while you're resting in the hammock. I prefer acoustic music while in woodsy setting. Dan Deacon's more urban sound clashes somewhat with wild nature.
