the way i see it, there will always be a "sing along act" (petty, police, pj, bruce) so it might as well be one where i love their catalog. the who definitely fits that bill for me.
I totally agree with most of what you are saying. Except for DMB. I started seeing them in 98 and have seen them over 40 times since then. They are a band that has continually changed over the years. There new album sounds nothing like Under the Table and Dreaming. They've expanded their lineup to include Jeff Coffin from the Flecktones and Tim Reynolds. DMB's music is going to sound slightly similar to most casual listeners because Dave's voice is so unique. Sure, they still play their hits from 10-15 years ago, but Ive never seen a band who didn't.
FTR, I've seen Jay Z and was very disappointed, but that was several years ago, so I hope that his stage show has improved. Fade to Black concert was okay and Glastonbury was meh to me. The cover of Wonderwall was just about the worst thing I've ever seen. I know he meant well, but a little preparation is necessary to perform a good cover.
There is a large amount of close-mindedness on this board, I def agree with that. I'd love to see your lineup, but I'm just guessing that it won't happen. I really hope that we get Neil, MMJ, and Arcade Fire.
Everyone's taste in music is very different and that's a good thing. I just think things get too negative on this board.
I agree with your dave analysis. I've seen dave probably 2 or 3 times a year for the last 3 years and even his old hits sound completely different and improved. Before I was into dave, I agree that his voice is what turned me off. It's an acquired taste but once you start to like a lot you appreciate the special things he does in his live shows, and how he changes up his songs every year or two. Bonnaroo gives dave and the rest of his amazingly talented band the chance to collaborate with others, which is another reason a Bonnaroo show is a special Dave show.
I can see where the dave haters are coming from. I have a buddy who took me out to Outside Lands last year with a press pass, and he was afraid to write about how daves set was by far better than the rest of the lineup because of the reaction his readers would have. I get the mainstream unappeal, but minutes 7-20 of any long dave jam can take you away just as much as the phish/grateful dead types (not to take away from them).
And so I sincerely hope that DMB is there and closes out the festival so that all the dave haters can hit the road or rest and I won't have as much trouble getting up close for the perfect end of my weekend.
As for Jay-Z, I would give him a chance (don't ever listen to him on purpose), but not with great expections, as the black eyed peas were the best "hip hop" performance I've seen (vs kayne (gag me) and Snoop Dog (fun show though). Would probably sit half his set out if mmj or Flaming lips get the late night.
If i were within 12 of Coachella I would go just for the gorillaz, and my dream is that they decide to stick around in the US for a few more weeks and cash in on another major festival on the other side of the country.
Oh well that's my two cents after reading for awhile.

Ummm what? Is this an opinion that is held by others? And while we're on this topic what hip-hop artists are inforoo approved if Jay -Z isn't?
my speculation would be 1. rolling stone 2. Robert Plant 3. u2 4. AC/DC 5. Led zep 6. the who 7. moody blues 8. eminem,Dre 9. widespread panic 10. radiohead. not exactly my top 10, just a speculation. do wish we had Gorilllllizzzzzzzaaa though! lineup comming soon just not soon anough! it would be cool to have jay-z with Nas!

Regarding Eminem, who wouldn't be a Roo headliner, but I saw him mentioned above... I was at Ween at the time, but as per FishingManiac who was at the edge of the stage in the photo pit for the Voodoo show... Eminem lip Synched his entire set, and badly at that

The thing is, as many albums as Neil Young has put out recently, when you see him live he plays mainly his classic tunes, and this would be even more the case in a festival setting than a regular concert of his. So complaining about ABB and GD playing their old shit, while hoping for Neil Young is ridiculous.
i've been watching the entire radiohead 06 performance on youtube..
..and ive been thinking. the twitter posts all point towards these great big names out there like the stones and the who, but they all focus on the idea of who do we WANT to be the headliner.. as in after all this speculation, who are the bands that we want to be there the most. and if you look at the past two or three years or so of inforoo information, its clear that bands like radiohead and daft punk are almost always the top picks or at least the most named. we have all come to realize that they are actually reading and seeing what we think on these boards. how ridiculous would it be if they actually gave us what we wanted? what if they gave their fans exactly what they want? which is, in fact, what their job is.. i understand bands have to actually be touring or performing, but if i can dream a little dream for a minute, what if they give us what we want and our headliners are radiohead, daft punk, and i guess like kings of leon or something..

what if
Members of Radiohead have said Bonnaroo is their favorite gig that they've every played. This won't happen though. Glasto would get them first.
yeah it makes sense that glasto would try and pay them more to be at their anniversary show. yeah it makes sense that they dont have any tour dates this year and are unlikely to come to roo until 2011 for our ten year anniversary. but when its your favorite gig ever, dont you want to showcase your brand new album there before it is released? look i know this wont happen, and im prepared for that. i will be ecstatic about anyone being at roo. i will always love roo for what it is, but you have to imagine that ashley capps knows we want radiohead and daft punk, etc. more than the biggest names you could ever invent. while some things, like a led zeppelin reunion are pretty implausible, i just want it to be known that it is possible.
if thom shows up to roo in any form, radiohead or solo, he will be greeted with a greater welcome than anyone anywhere could ever give him. in the spectrum of bonnaroo, you have kanye on one side and thom on the other
fri.-stevie wonder(6-8), kings of leon (9-11), string cheese incident (11-3 which) sat.-neil young (6-8), the who(9-11:30), soundgarden (midnight-2 which) sun.-furthur (6-8), dave matthews band (9-12), my morning jacket (6:45-8:45 which)
I now have confirmation of Headliners for Fri, Sat and Sun from Superfly....this post is the closest I've seen to the real thing - I will tell you that you got one of the Fri night headliners correct and one of the Sun night headliners correct. You completely missed the Sat niht headliner.
