Bruce is definitely a bigger name. He can sell out a stadium in any city he goes to. Phish needs to rely on people travelling from all over to do the same.
I don't know if this is a good argument for Bruce to be honest. Phish can sell out a stadium in any city he goes to as well, and then even more fans flocking the lot outside just to be close to the experience. Bruce hasn't drawn 100,000 people to an indian reservation in the middle of the everglades just to hear him and his band play for a solid weekend. I've heard people say that Bruce should be top bill cause he sells out Giants Stadium in 15 minutes. Have any of you paid attention to the Phish tour? Try 15 seconds...
Aside from the fact that I really don't care who is top bill... I think that Superfly was probably more excited about snagging Phish than Bruce, but that's just pure speculation on my part. Phish is probably more of a money maker than Bruce is for Superfly at this point in time.
I guess really it just comes down to giving respect where respect is due. Bruce is the Boss, and has had a longer and much more successful career than Phish in my opinion.
This post came across to me as pretentious and condescending. And yes Bruce can sell out Giants Stadium in 15 minutes TO PEOPLE FROM NY AND NJ not the whole U.S. and parts of Canada. You do realize that Bruce can put tix on sale in over 50 cities at once and sell out in 15 minutes right? Actually more cities. I suppose someone will chime in and say that's just because most of Bruce's fans have jobs.
As for all the Max Weinberg comments, yeah I'm totally looking forward to Max. He's awesome, and we know his name. i have no idea who plays drums for Phish, and I'm a drummer. I bet most, if not all of us could name most if not all of the E. Street Band. That's where top billing goes.
And before you go ad tell me how condescending this post is realize that my karma is -1 most of the time. That means that I DON'T GIVE A CRAP! You're hippies. You're supposed to love me anyway. Just like Jesus. Who by the way, thinks that Phish sucks. He told me so last time I ate peyote. ;D

I just hope when my dad finds out that Bruce is gonna be there, he won't wanna come...oh god..............
lol. my dad is probably coming...and its solely for springsteen.
This illustrates why Bruce has top billing. I wonder if anyone's dad is going because Phish is going to be there?? Ohh and guess what, adults with adult children have the highest disposable income (For Phish fans, that is what you buy your Pharmaceuticals with).

I don't know what was pretentious or condescending about it... I am not doubting that Bruce can sell out a stadium in 15 minutes, nor am I doubting where those people are coming from. In fact, if you read the whole post I acknowledged that I thought Bruce had a longer and more successful career than Phish. Unless you thought I was being condescending towards Phish... ha!
Anywho, no condescending or pretentious feelings towards either of these bands. They're both perfectly capable of being the top bill of Bonnaroo. As it turns out, Bruce gets the top bill and Phish gets two big time slots. I actually kind of like how that turned out
Enough with the Bruce vs. Phish crap. They are both huge gets. I'm sure Trey is thrilled Bruce will be there. And I'm pretty sure Bruce has heard of Phish.

i think my uncle might be goin too lol. im 22 and ive seen bruce around 15 times. first time seeing him i was 4. needless to say i was born in jersey....
i went to bonnaroo last year and loved every second. i love a lot of the acts on this initial lineup. but i must admit i would pay $300 just to see the boss in this kind of setting. he will put on a hell of a show.
Post by jumpinjamesbrown on Feb 3, 2009 23:30:31 GMT -5
the boss has had a longer career, certainly more popular if you consider radio play and record sales also if you were to ask most people to name a song from either band they would have an easier time coming up with a song from bruce. i don't particularly like the boss but anyone i have mentioned this lineup to which is mostly people over 40 and some have looked at me and said who's phish

Trey and Bruce are friends, from my understanding, Trey has been to many bruce shows and been backstage, at the phillips arena show in Atlanta during the Devils and Dust Bruce solo tour Trey was third row center with his producer Brandon O'brian who is Bruce's producer. Bruce dedicated Darkness on the edge of town to Trey that night. I'm hoping for a collaboration between the two.
Your first statement was telling me that I was a "noob" and that I basically didn't understand live music. Yet, you didn't intend you hurt my feelings?? Either you have spent too much time on a computer and not around other people or you aren't a kind person. You don't start off a discussion with an insult. If you did that in real life you are in for a major argument or the other person is just going to walk off.
You have to understand that Phish, aren't really that popular. All their albums put together probably did not sell even half as many copies as a single one of Bruce Springsteen's albums. I am not a huge Bruce fan. Lots of people aren't huge Bruce fans. Most people know Bruce Springsteen very well. Most people would like to see Bruce Springsteen. Most people in this country don't even know who Phish is.

I don't think you're giving Phish enough credit. Perhaps they aren't as popular as Bruce (who I think is terrible!), but they are a very popular band, even outside of the jam band community. I'm sure Nickel Back is more widely known than TV on the Radio, but that doesn't mean they're better. They are one of the best in their genre. Most people probably haven't heard their music, but most people have heard of them. They don't get radio play like Bruce, so naturally, not as many people will listen to then. You mark my words, people who have never heard Phish will become huge fans. I highly doubt anyone who watches Bruce's show is going to have a life changing experience. But I PROMISE you the same won't be said for Phish. A lost soul will come out of that late night Phish show a changed man...you'll see...

This comment was even more pretentious. I suppose I haven't seen much live music...

Phuck Phish. BRRUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUCE!
Talk about calling someone pretentious! You sounded like a complete a$$hole. Sorry! But it's true. And you think most people know who all the members of the E Street Band are? haha I only know who Max is b/c I watch Jay Leno. I don't know anyone under 45 who is a big Bruce fan. Every time I tell someone the line up, they makes a comment about how horrible Bruce Springsteen is. Haha! And here I thought I was the only one who thought he sucked.

I think you are not giving Springsteen enough credit. You do realize that one of the most common ways to describe a Springsteen show is as a "religious experience"? I'm not saying that the same isn't true for Phish b/c I truthfully have never heard anything they play and am really looking forward to their performance.
Also, Bruce really doesn't get too much airplay in many regions of the U.S. and hasn't for many years. Sure, everyone has heard Dancing in the Dark, and Born in the USA, but if that is your definition of Bruce, then you are really missing out.
Here is one of my favorite quotes: "Bruce fans are special. Like Bob Dylan's, they are interested in his mind. Like Elvis', they are interested in his sexuality and show-biz pizazz. Like Woody Guthrie's, they love his common-man compassion. And he sings a romantic story in a way that attracts not only gals who love his macho sensitivity, but guys who want it. But Bruce's fans go one step further. They think he's a god. They don't talk about it, most don't admit it, but for them he is a religion."
Oh and FYI... this is coming from a 23 year-old, southern, female, Republican.

You may be 100% correct. Phish might even be the greatest musicians in the universe. The fact is that they are not as popular as Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band. The top billing doesn't go to the best musician, but the one that is going to attract the most attention and grab the most headlines. More newspapers, more websites, are going to post about Bruce Springsteen then about Phish headlining a music festival. That is why Bruce has top billing. That is why it was announced immediately after the Superbowl.

I can tell you this, I dont know much about Bruce, or his die hard fans, but I'm not going to write him or them off as a bunch of ass holes, or pricks, or anything like that. I will enjoy the show, even if some of the assholes from jersey come and try to push their nitrogen for 10 bucks a balloon
Wow I cant believe you guys are arguing about this. Both bands are huge, you can make an argument for either one of them being on the top of the bill. It doesnt matter, both are going to have face melting shows. This thread is proof, I mean look at how passionately both sides are arguing for their favorite band. Bruce and Phish are two of the best live acts out there, it doesnt matter who has top billing because their both going to put on great shows.
