I read the first 3, and I liked them But honestly, I lost interest after that and didn't care to read on Though I still I enjoy the films for what they are I usually rent them when they go onto DVD And now I know a key emotional scene/plot point/surprise from the new one
*edit - I guess my point is this is a "General" film discussion thread, not the Deathly Hollows discussion thread. If it was, I would not have opened it because I would have assumed the film was being discussed in detail inside
I did not cry over our little friend's death (edited for LRH) because the woman squeezed into the seat next to me had gas at the end of the movie.... too much popcorn? I have a cold and even with my stuffy nose, I could smell it. LORDY!
Saw it last Friday and highly recommend it. It's quite amazing how Boyle keeps you engaged with the subject matter. The audience is stuck in a canyon with one character for most of the film. You go on a journey inside Ralston's mind, as he uses a small amount of gear to survive.
What touched me the most is the character's regrets and epiphanies when he reaches a moment of complete despair...
"This boulder has been waiting for me since before I was born, since it was a meteorite. Every breath and step I have taken has led up to this moment....I caused this. I put myself here...”
I will say this. The most gruesome thing in the movie isn't visual. It's a sound. Oooh lord, it will make you squirm.

127 Hours, along with Black Swan and True Grit, is one of my most anticipated films of the holiday season. 127 Hours is finally coming to the Rialto in Raleigh this Friday. Can't wait.

The Coen Brothers, Darren Aronofsky, Alejandro González Iñárritu, and Danny Boyle all with new films in the holiday season. Merry Christmas everyone!!!
It really annoys me when a movie is a limited release like 127 Hours and Black Swan and since i live in Columbia, SC i have to wait an extra 4 to 6 weeks to see it.
I see now...December 29 in the USA for Biutiful. Love Bardem, love Iñárritu.
So far, my film of the year is Winter's Bone, which just barely edges out The Social Network. But, any of the four films just mentioned may very well top the list when it's all said and done.
EDIT: Oh, and Blue Valentine, which is supposed to be really intense. And The Fighter, which is probably the most iffy of the bunch; Christian Bale is rarely involved in a truly bad film, though. Lot of awesome movies this month after a lull the last couple months.

That's just the way it is with limited releases, man. You have to find your local cool, artsy independent theatre and just wait for them to get it. I'm sure you'll get both those flicks in your area at some point. Columbia seems like a cool town.
Man, looking at the Nickelodeon's website, it does seem pretty lackluster. Something about Spongebob Squarepants and Jimmy Neutron...Just kidding. Upcoming releases there look pretty weak there, though. Bummer, guys, sorry.
Well, you guys should at least rent/download Winter's Bone if you haven't seen it. To put it generally, it's about meth-heads in a mountain town. It comes off like one of the best Coen Brothers movies that they never made, except with the emphasis on "black" instead of on "comedy."
Yeah, I really shouldn't complain. I've lived in towns where the nearest theater of any kind was at least 2 hours away, and I have gotten to see some pretty good movies at the Nickelodeon, plus it's a nice atmosphere with beers and non typical theater crowds. Every now and then they have some really good movies, there, and sometimes even have workshops which are almost always neat.
saw 127 hours this past weekend. i know they always say that people do crazy things when faced with death but i don't know that i could
SPOILER ALERT (in case you haven't watched the news in the past 8 years)
drink my own pee or cut off my own arm. i would def be dead if i was that guy.
i watched "the making of" on HBO and danny boyle mentioned that aaron actually said that bit about the rock SFA.....that it had been waiting for him his whole life, and that if it hadn't gotten him then, it would have happened some other time. i thought james franco did incredibly well, and i hope he gets recognized in some way, since this is such a departure from what he is so well known for.
Tremendous movie. Not what I was expecting at all. Way less tense than I thought it would be (except, of course, for that scene). It was really just a drama that unfolded in an untraditional way. And Franco was awesome, for sure.

^What does SFA stand for in that context?
I agree. I wasn't sure what to expect going in and that made it all the better. Most of us know the news story, so I found the character development amazing.. Far away from the sensationalism from the press and more towards a cathartic understanding of what lead him to do what he did. At least on a psychological level, away from his instinct to survive.
It didn't hurt to have Sugar Ros at the end.

We only have one theater like that, the Nickelodeon, and many of the top indie films don't even go through there. It's pretty lame.
yeah and if the nick does get the film, it'll be several weeks after its release, and when i say several i mean 7-8. at least once every year though Columbiana Grande in Harbison gets one of those limited movies in a decent amount of time. in 08 they got The Wrestler like 2 or 3 weeks after it was released.
The Nick did get the FLips' Christmas on Mars, which i thought was really cool, no matter how much i didnt like the actual film.
Yeah, I was hounding Nickelodeon about if they would be getting the Wrestler, at that time. I ultimately caved in and got the screener and never saw it in theaters. Still, one of my favorite movies of the last decade.
"Winter's Bone" was pretty good... only nitpick is the main character went from likable to Ellen Page levels of annoying at the drop of a hat in some scenes, but that's nothing I can't look past. I'd say it's around a **** movie, and one I'd like to see again.
i'm graduating from USC in 4 days and moving back to Charleston where the Terrace theater is, which is great on getting the limited release movies at this time of year. 127 Hours has reached Charleston so i am pumped about finally getting to see that.
in terms of awards season movies-- not much has really got my interest this year. i'll see kings speech and black swan just because they are getting so much praise and i want to judge for myself what the Best film of the year is. 127 Hours, True Grit, and The Fighter are my must-sees right now.
