Kill List is one of the most brutal, shocking flicks I've ever seen. It's a well written/paced hitman drama that turns to psychological horror only in it's final act. The finale is straight disturbing and may leave you mentally scarred.

Really great film and quite underrated. I thought this whole film was well done but the last half hour is something special
Life of Pi. Thought it was brilliant. Amazing visuals. Great narrative with a powerful ending. That scene in the hospital when he is talking to the two Japanese guys. And the motion capture actor that played the tiger... incredible. Definitely going high up in my top 10 list of 2012.
Killing Them Softly. My coworkers and I had planned to torrent and watch a movie last night. We were going to watch Flight, but then at the last second someone said, 'I'm not sold on the synopsis', and our other choice was this. I love Andrew Dominic (Assassination of Jesse James is one of my favorite films), so I was stoked to finally be able to see this. I enjoyed it for the most part. The cinematography was the best part of the film, along with the music juxtaposition in some scenes. The acting was great, and it was awesome to see so many actors from The Sopranos again (even if they were never on the screen at the same time). The political allegory was less-than-subtle, and a little too in your face in my opinion, although the last line of the film was great. Good movie all around.

Cloud Atlas next week.
Will be excited to hear what you think of Cloud Atlas.
I am pretty torn on Cloud Atlas... that makeup was horrific, and while I know the movie had plenty of intentional humor, I feel that there were a number of things that were unintentional. I was entertained by it, and some of the acting was pretty good... but, yeah, I'm not really sold on it being one of the better movies of the year. I hate using the word, but it was a very pretentious movie that did a number of things alright and kept things interesting throughout the whole three hours. I really, really think that the make-up was so bad that it took me out of the movie, numerous times. Still, though, I enjoyed the movie and think it deserves a look from movie fans of many sorts. Even though this is a mainstream movie, this seems like a movie that will have a more "cult" like following in years to come. I'd probably give it ***1/4 out of 5.
So I saw The Hobbit in a Mini-max HFR 3d and it was unbelievably gorgeous. Dave and all you other naysayers are idiots. There were two major problems I had though, it was so pretty I sometimes got distracted and stopped paying attention to the plot and I got depressed I will never get to see the LOTR films in HFR. Although I would bet my savings that after the Hobbit they are going to gradually re-release the trilogy in retro-fit 3d
Anyone have an idea of when The Master could be coming out on DVD? There was basically no way I could see it in theaters and my computer is terrible for watching movies online.
No, but I was imagining if the movie was going to be up for many Oscars (which it probably is going to be getting 3 or 4 nods at most, I predict) it would see a theatrical re-release closer to awards season, but at this point, I see it coming to video around mid-late Spring. No release date is scheduled, yet, but it's a first day purchase for me.
The Master's a strange case... it comes out and it more or less gets good to great reviews, then the longer it's out, people start saying it's overrated and some outright saying that it isn't good. I love it, it's probably tied for my 3rd favorite PT Anderson movie, and my personal favorite movie from 2012.

I got much of the same vibe. I go to school in Dubuque, IA, so needless to say it's not exactly very "culturally friendly" so there was no way I could see it when it first came out. All I had to go on were reviews and word of mouth, and I noticed a similar pattern to that. Very hopeful for a re-release type deal if it catches some Oscar nods, which I believe it will.

You wouldn't happen to have a link for that would you? Looks incredibley interesting.

Okay, so, don't hate me, but I finally saw There Will Be Blood, and I liked it (the ending actually particularly made it for me), but I didn't looove it. I don't know. It was well made and well acted, but it didn't wow me.
I'm looking forward to seeing The Master. It played in Reno, but not here, and we never got around to getting up there to see it.
I saw Zero Dark Thirty yesterday. Still figuring out what I think on some of the details and breaking down things, but overall I thought it was pretty excellent. It wasnt what I expected and I dont see it being a real contender for best picture.
I havent seen too much on here about it yet. Have you all seen it?
No, but as I said before, it's what I've been wanting to see the most. Going to have to try and find a cheap/matinee showing of it. I am hearing absolutely nothing but positive reaction to this movie.
It's not out here yet. I think it's still in the "in select theaters" stage.
I wondered what was up. I think I saw a trailer that said Jan 11th, but then it was playing here so I went. The shows were either sold out or close to it yesterday. And RottenTomatoes has it listed at 94% positive.
I'll wait to discuss when some peeps have seen it, but if you are interested in seeing it I think you'll be glad you went.

No shame in that. TWBB is definitely an acquired love. There's a not a whole lot of WOW that was absolutely incredible moments. It's just a really fascinating acting and directing tour de force. The Master looks much the same.
Very interesting film. In the past 10 years or so, a ton of movies have been released about the various conflicts in the middle east. Syriana, Body of Lies, etc. After a while I had started to stay away due to lack of interest. I feel as if they are all shot the same. Shaky hand-held camera work. Cliched Middle Eastern soundtrack. This film, to me, managed to rise above it and stay the same. Jessica Chastain puts in a great performance, and makes the film more human and personal, giving it less of a history channel vibe. The torture scenes are not as bad as the criticism makes it out to be. It was also fun spotting out various actors with small bits in the film (Andy from Parks and Rec, Stannis from Games of Thrones, etc.). Like The Hurt Locker, this film is superb, but doesn't hit quite as hard (IMO). The final 30 - 45 minutes are amazing though. It would go in my top 10, but probably not my top 5. It'll get tons of awards attention, and might even win simply because of its subject matter.
This film solidifies the fact that 2012 has been one of the best years in film in a long time. Every film I've seen this year has been great and deserving of whatever awards it wins or gets nominated for. Still need to see Silver Linings Playbook, The Master, and Flight.
Yeah, Zero Dark Thirty was superb. Definitely deserving of the acclaim it has been getting, I'd probably put it behind The Master and Django as my #3 favorite film of last year. Personally, I enjoyed and got more out of this than Hurt Locker, but this is a deliberate pace that this movie takes and could maybe present itself as a bore to some more casual viewers. I think that this is a pretty important movie in that, not only is the topic one of the most important events of our lifetimes, but you really don't get movies on this type of subject handled in such a way, as Jpbrez said. Acting was solid, at times I wasn't sure of Chastain's direction with some of her more extravagant acting in the movie but it didn't take away from or obscure the big picture. Great script, probably best of the year from what I can tell... just felt extremely natural. Essentially, the movie is a work of art and one that I think will stand the test of time as an important flick. An easy yet somewhat restrained ****1/2 out of 5, in my book.
