Why no one is talking about "notion" and "I want you" surprises me, two of the stronger songs on the album. Yes it is more polished music and sure the lyrics are still lacking but what people seem to have a problem with is that they sound different. Bob Dylan, The Rolling Stones, The Beatles, etc., etc. All of them grew very quickly, changing sounds from album to album. It was many records later that they all came back to the sound they started with and put out classic records. Blood on the tracks a return for dylan, Some girls for the stones. Im not comparing the Kings of leon's music to these other artists, Im just saying they are young and are going to change. But not to worry they're not finished with the hard rock sound. I personally would like to see them put out some honky tonk/ blues. we'll see what happens. Best songs on the new album. closer, crawl, notion, i want you

beers and cheers to you my friend....
the songs you mentioned aren't my favorite, but your reasoning is spot-on i think...
reminds me of RYAN ADAMS too.... i mean, HEARTBREAKER was classic and GOLD was near-classic and so is LOVE IS HELL. But then there was ROCK-N-ROLL and DEMOLITION... but now he's back to making great albums like COLD ROSES and EASY TIGER...
i'll say this newest album is near-great, but not as great as AHA SHAKE HEARTBREAK and BECAUSE OF THE TIMES......
"near-great" and "near-classic" are new categories i just invented... enjoy them.
Here is my take... I don't like the new album personally (doesn't suit my tastes), but that doesn't make it a bad album by objective standards... It is a good arena-rock album... I simply wish they had taken a different direction rather than going full-on arena-rock, but I accept that this is the direction they've gone, and don't hate on a good album... My review is here:
speaking as someone who is mostly unfamiliar with their older albums, i like this one
especially love: closer, sex on fire, use somebody, revelry... all are pretty different from each other
and i agree that as a whole it begins stronger than it ends
^same for me. I think Closer is an unbelievable song.
I just got into KOL recently, but I'd love to see them at the farm. Really I'd love to see them open a latenight set with Closer played on a dark fog/laser filled
I'm loving this album more every time I listen to it. Closer, Crawl, Sex on Fire, Use Somebody, Manhattan, Be Somebody all stand out. I love the anthemic arena rock sound, much better than their earlier stuff but then their earlier stuff does not suit to my tastes. I like the fact that I can actually understand what he's singing about rather than the gutteral sounds of earlier albums. Because of the Times was alright, with Fans and Ragoo standing out, hated Aha Shake Heartbreak.

THANK YOU!
I agree that a lot of people's complaints are just because they sound different. I personally LOVE that they started to evolve. You're post was everything I was thinking.
Also I don't get all the talk of "the rest are just filler" or "filler tracks" or anything like that. Do people think that artists and musicians put shitty songs on the album to take up space for the few good songs? No.
Musicians make a ton of songs and pick the ones that they think are the BEST and put them on the album. I can't imagine KoL saying "yea these few songs rock....lets put on a bunch of other shit so we can make an album". Nah that's not how it works.
I like the end of the album. I think the last three tracks are some of the strongest that Kings have made. Be Somebody changes up 3 different times.....with some creedence clearwater sounding jamming going on. Cold Desert hits me hard and I love the fade out/fade in thing they do at the end. Blew me away cuz I thought the song was over.

Yes, even though I agreed at first with the "filler" comments, I don't think that anymore. Each time I put on that particular CD (which has been many times in this past week) I think about how dedicated artists wouldn't put out songs that they aren't proud of and took the time to make. Maybe that makes me a hypocrite for changing my opinion, but this is truly what I've been feeling and thinking.
As far as the Kings evolving and changing since they first started out, isn't that we're supposed to want as fans? It would get boring after a while if your favorite artists kept putting out albums that all sound the same. Of course, I'm not saying that I'd be all gung-ho if they put out a hip hop album or what have you...that would be a completely different story. That's changing genres, not necessarily evolving as writers, singers, and performers. If I'm not mistaken, in their SPIN article, they talk about how they "wanted a different style" and consequently decided to go with a new producer.
That SPIN article is a good read, by the way. Definitely check it out if you haven't already. Gives a good history on the Kings and is accompined by some nice pictures of the guys.
I just found out that that new song ("Sex On Fire") that's all over the place is them.
Man, I hate that song so much. It seriously sounds like just about anything else on "alternative radio" nowadays. And I always thought KOL were an alright group. That song is just horrid.

From their website, I have no cash for a ticket anytime soon, but I do hope to be there
"KINGS OF LEON, LIVE IN CONCERT, AT MADISON SQUARE GARDEN IN NEW YORK CITY! KINGS OF LEON HEADLINE THE WORLD'S MOST FAMOUS ARENA ON JANUARY 29, 2009! TICKETS FOR M.S.G WILL GO ON SALE FRIDAY, OCTOBER 24TH AT 10AM."
I really like the album. I love love the lead singers voice. I haven't actually heard their other albums, but it makes me want to download all of them.
but it's hard to imagine why they'd pass up Leno. i mean, i don't like Leno, and i never ever watch him, but lots of people do and it would have been good exposure i guess.... eh, whatever.

The new album doesnt really have any of their up beat stuff that Ive always loved (like Taper Jean Girl for example) its mostly slower, its very detailed though (alot like Milk). I like this album though, I need to listen to it a few more times before I can decide if I love it or not but at the moment there arent that many songs that I have on my car playlist rotation on my Ipod. Good album so far, not great.
