To quote my wife as we were leaving the What Stage after 4:00am: "Kanye West doesn't care about Bonnaroo."
Kanye West had a great chance to acquire lots of new fans at Roo and blew it BIG TIME. My wife & I went to check out his show and were among the many who got tired of waiting and left. I don't know if it was his ego (waiting for other acts to stop playing) or what. The stage appeared to be ready by 3:30 from our vantage point way back in the field, so I think the set-up delay excuse was BS.
Like many others, we got tired of waiting and left to go back to our tent. Of course, just as we were going to sleep his set started, waking up many of our neighbors. Why was Kanye louder than Metallica? Did he think that would get everyone to come back?
given that its a night show, yes he wanted to play at night. so the roo mgmt, goes okay mr. west you want night-time, you got it, here's your night time set, now go compete with your buddies for the crowds attention.
Again, 4 days, 8 hours of night each day, thats 32 hours of night. but, he plays the two hours where the other hip hop guys are playing.
i'm sorry, but your logic is ridiculous. KANYE decided to play late night...so they gave it to him. did you want them rearrange the ENTIRE FESTIVAL to meet his needs? HE decided to play during all his buddies. not mention, there are ALWAYS lots of shows that conflict which have fans of all of them.
i wanted to see phil, sigur, ghostland, and chali...i only got to see sigur and ghostland. conflicts happen...this is not news. your reasons are weak, and so are kanye's.
having said that...i'm done with this. kanye effed up, superfly was to blame as well, and regardless, i had an effing blast.
you are right about the headlining part, headliners don't get treated like small potatos. but why put three top notch hip hop acts at the same time as the hip-hop headliner.
but bonnaroo never scheduled kanye vs. latenight hip hop. KANYE was the one who made his time be changed. his original set time was against only Jack Johnson

Hasn't hip hop pretty much always been thrown all in the same time frame in the same night at Roo?
I think Kanye being late actually makes more sense than whykanyewaslate. No offense dude, cuase opinions and insight are always appreciated and encouraged. I just don't follow
just look - Saturday late night was awful after Phil Lesh was made to leave the What Stage. This was supposed to be one of the big draws to roo 08. "MMJ and Phil Lesh will play the Which stage, where historical acts like Primus and Flips have jammed into the wee hours of the morning!!!!!"
what the fuck ever. they made Phil quit while he was droppin BOMBS. Then everyone had to stop. For Kanye West..
Now, when there are thousands of people spun the funk out, and they are at Bonnaroo, they want music, and they want it good. Superfly people made every act announce that Kanye is performing at the What Stage, and they kept making it sound like he was ABOUT to come on.
Instead, there was no music anywhere, a field of pissed off cold people coming down booing Kanye, and people yelling "FUCK KANYE!" Everywhere, threating to riot.
does this sound heady to you? I was there, it was despair - trust me.
What would happen to you if you went into work hours and hours late, didn't appologize or give any reason, and then halfassed piddledicked around for an hour then bounced?

We were sleeping in tent only all weekend and it was by far the loudest of all the shows I was wearing ear plugs and had a fan in the tent and when I heard "Good Morning" I shot up and was like WTF? I thought he had been playing all night or something. But yes it was loud.

you guys are right. He's only at the top of game right now, raking in millions.
I bet he loves himself so much that he said fuck these people at bonaroo, its only the biggest festival in the US. Plus its mostly white people, they don't fucking matter anyway.
I'm kanye west, and if they can't wait for me, fuck them. I can do what I want. and I what I really want to do is wait until 5 am and go have to perform live in front a tiny ass crowd of people yelling fuck me.
I am a PR Machine!! I'll be all over the news, everyone will see how large my c*ck is! then I'll sell even more records and have more fans once people see that I can ass rape 60,000 crackers for no reason at all!!
yup, sounds just like the idea a mutli-millionaire, award winning artist would come up with.

I think Kanye, or one of his "people" is spying on inforoo lol.

Somehow I doubt it was solidarity for the hip-hop side that led to him going on late. Could be but I doubt it. If it was that he'd of left his first time slot open and then had them come up there. Enough folks would of come over from Jack playing and they could of blow Roo up. This did not happen.
The one thing that bothers me about your logic is this. They have scheduled acts in common at the same time for years. This way no one tent is loaded up and the others are blank. I have seen them do this countless times. Or even have a theme in the tents. Notice how the first two acts on Sunday were steel pedal? Or how they will schedule bluegrass all in one tent for the day. Some of those shows get an hour as well.
Personally if I was Superfly I'd of told him to shove it you play with a conflict like all the other non-headlining folks. They didn't and it turned out really bad. I wanted to see Tailb. Instead I was waiting for dunder nuts and hit light show in the sunrise. I'd heard such good things about his show that I was willing to miss acts who I actually buy their albums (Talib and Chali 2na) because I head his show was that good. Well it wasn't. I feel I got suckered and I was pissed about it at the time and looking back rightfully so.
So Kanye can kiss my arse and if you keep it up with the trolling expect to not be able to post anymore. You had some good points (even if a bit flawed in my view) starting off, don't wreck it.
Kanye West: "nawwwwwwww. Fuuuuuck dat. I ain't ev'n trynuh her any uh dat honkey shlt at the other main stage while i'm doin dis 8 ball. tell em day gotta tern dat shlt off, Kanye West is at this muthafucka. And turnat Nas up louder out there on the What stage P.A., people are still leaving. Announce at every stage that my act is bout to start. Get em over here.
What? other artists are performin? Fvck that. I'm the only true artist up in this muthafucka!"
Dude, I seriously can't concentrate on anything but bonnaroo right now. . .It's to the point where I'm poking myself in the eye with foreign objects. . . I think I just need to be sedated until Tuesday. . . . Dystopian Dream
I was indifferent to Kanye until they made Phil stop in the middle of his set. It seemed obvious to me he could have gone at least till 4 and I think it is a fair bet to say he would have gone longer too. Thats why I joined in with the Kanye Sucks chants right befor Phil's accoustic set, which was amazing. I think Bonnaroo will learn something from this. Everyone said Metallica was going to ruin Roo, they were not my cup of tea but they rocked and they respected the audieance, Kanye didn't ruin Roo because nothing short of a natural diasastor could do that but he sure as hell ruined my and many other peoples chane of having any respect for him.

Well we had decided before Kanye came on stage that if we didn't think it was that good we were goin to head to Ghostland Observatory even though we weren't familiar with them. I wished we would have. We SAT for at least 2 hours cuddling in the cold waiting and waiting and then when he finally came on it was too late to go anywhere else. Everyone was "prepared" for the glow show as even Eddie Vedder gave us word to get ready for the glow show.

I'm also pretty bummed about missing out on some great acts just to wait on Kanye. I will admit I like some of his music, it is catchy and fun to dance to, but his ego has always rubbed me the wrong way. I decided to go anyways because the light show intrigued me, and I was "prepared" to have a good time like Eddie Vedder suggested. :] While waiting for the show, I met some really great people that made the time go by faster, but the fact that he didn't even acknowledge how long we had waited at all bothered me. I'm not here to discuss why he was late, because it all seems to be speculation. One simple apology would have been enough for me.
I kept joking to the people around me "He may be Kanye West, but even he can't stop the sun from coming up." Once the music started it was fun, but I can't believe he stopped after only an hour.
My favorite line of the night (shouted by one of the people I had met) "What the f-ck Kanye my dr-gs are wearing off!"
i didn't really want to see kanye but my friend wanted to see a song or two so he could at least *say* he's seen kanye play. we waited for a half hour or so before saying screw this... we headed over to see chali 2na which was definitely one of my favorite performances of the weekend.
after chali 2na and laughing hysterically at the people in the silent disco for 45 minutes i head music off in the distance and decided to check it out. turns out kanye had decided to perform after all.. i was not impressed. in the slightest.
it was too light out to get the mood right. i pretty much lost it when he started rolling around on the ground and talking to a computer. sure, some of his songs are catchy but the entire thing was laughable.
This is close to what I did minus the silent disco... Chali 2na was INCREDIBLE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Such spot on rhymes.. I was feeling it and definitely getting my dance on. Kanye was easily the worst performance at Bonnaroo.
Has it been confirmed by anyone official that they made Phil Lesh stop playing so Kanye could go on? This makes no sense to me, and unless I hear it from a decent source, I can't believe it. That tidbit smacks of being a Bonnarumour.
Phil literally said before their encore that they were cutting it early since kanye was about to go on
yeah Juggernaught. And Phil was pretty bummed when he was saying it. I hope he never performs at Bonnaroo ever again. so shitty. 75 minutes early. *shaking head*
Phil said that there had been a change in schedule and that he would be ending his set. He mentioned it was due to a light show. this was around 245am, as he said that kanye had started two minutes ago (so we thought). Everyone in the place was quite upset as that show was on point and definately could have lasted till sunrise. What really sucked was trying to find some other music on the farm while feeling quite electrified. Luckily, Chali 2na was there to steal our faces. the frustrating part was walking by the empty which stage after 4am and realizing phil could have finished his set
yeah Juggernaught. And Phil was pretty bummed when he was saying it. I hope he never performs at Bonnaroo ever again. so poopy. 75 minutes early. *shaking head*
Yeah I wouldn't be surprised to not see Phil or any other Dead members at Roo again. That just doesn't make any sense for Superfly to give into that egomanic, while cutting Phil's set short. Phil and The Dead are the roots of Roo. I think those actions say a whole hell of alot about Superfly. I hope they realize their huge mistake and do something to rectify it.

i'm glad you agree Dan. He's not only the roots of roo, but the roots of the festival scene. I feel terrible for Phil that he had to announce Kanye's set, knowing he didn't want to.

Honestly, if I was Phil Lesh... I would never accept another invite to the Roo again. Even if he was headlining. You don't just tell somebody of his status to stop playing, especially since he IS the bonnaroo vibe. When I think Bonnaroo, i sure as fuck don't think of kanye. If anything they should've told kanye to just go home cause Phil was actually playing music.
