I really hate that THIS of all things is getting the most press.
I mean...according to a lot of people, any press is good press. I'm sure Kanye's camp is lapping this up. I sort of wish it could be dropped it sucks, but I'm sure a lot of Kanye's people will construe us as a "bunch of ungrateful hippies" or something...
Haven't read the whole thread yet to see if anyone mentioned this but at the airport someone pulled a prank and they paged Kanye West over the intercom on Monday afternoon and the whole crowd heading home from Roo erupted in laughter.

I was at the show and left Sigur Ros early and had other shows I wanted to go to as well, but I didn't because of his show. Overall he was late and had a short set and the glow and the dark part sucked...I think he totally rocked the songs he did, good show I thought despite all the mishaps.

he lost alot of fans that night... that's all i'll really say on the topic... he had a packed house at his scheduled time and by the time he came out, it was a half empty field.
To be presented with a big slice of cheese after waiting that long at that hour, with no explanation, shoutout or anything, was a crude insult. I had to leave after 2 songs, disappointed that I had missed so much GOOD music for such a fiasco. I went in a fan, and left quite the opposite.

My neighbor said the reason Kanye went on so late was because he waited on Phil Lesh to finish. I thought he did it out of respect for Phil and was willing to cut him some slack...but when he clarified and explained it was because he wanted no other acts performing during his set....I lost that tiiiiny little shred of respect I had. Like someone else said, that field was filled at 2:45 with many people who weren't even remotely fans that were willing to check out this guys show(myself included) He could have gained so many loyal fans from all walks of life had he just taken a little time for an apology or a thanks for waiting shout out. Oh well...The Yonder Mountain String Band did it right the next day and did what Kanye couldn't do... changed me from a random passer by into a loyal fan
I saw him headline Lollapalooza a couple years ago - with a band and none of the light-up frills - and it was a good show. Although, he did publicly chew out the sound guy for embarrassing him in front of a hometown crowd. Seeing this, after having seen him play a more authentic set, was a shame. Even if it had started on time, it was still plenty cheesy/stupid/self-absorbed. That Glow-in-the-Dark show didn't even technically "glow."
And was I following this right? He had himself some cybersex on the ship's holodeck during Gold Digger?
One of my favorite people-watching moments this year was watching a guy with a big grin leaving Centeroo Sunday with a "Festival Alert/Kanye West @ 2:45am" sign in his hand. That's got to be quite the souvenir.

I had no interest in Kanye at all until Saturday when I started hearing about the Glowbots. I didn't even stick around ot see his show. Instead I missed other stuff on Saturday at my first bonnaroo. Next time I will stick to my plan of not having a plan and sticking to it.

I think what really irks me is that this was touted as a legendary glow in the dark show with incredible light show. What I saw was really no better than my winamp visualization. It was too little, WAY too late.
So Pearl Jam was late in playing and late in breaking down the set. Got it. Understood. Here would be my list of grievances having to do with how things spiraled downward from there.
1. An hour long delay in Pearl Jam ending and breaking down does not equal a nearly 2 hour delay in putting up Kanye's stage set.
2. Offering an explanation of the delay (with regular updates) would have been simple, painless and most appreciated by people who had left other concerts early, only to have to wait far longer than expected for Kanye's show.
3. Leaving after only an hour performance of a promised 2+ hour concert, with no explanation from either Superfly or West, only compounds the insult.
Personally, I agree with those who are wondering if Kanye's ego couldn't stand having to perform over the sound of Phil Lesh at the Which Stage. I also suspect that Kanye's ego was what led him to ask to be shifted to the main stage to begin with. That he used his elaborate stage setup as the excuse to ask for the larger, more prestigious stage, promising his full "Glow in the Dark" concert to entice Superfly into agreeing. That he knowingly and falsely told Superfly that it would be no problem to put up his stage in a ridiculously short period of time, thinking that people would just wait around. He knows how long setup takes. His roadies undoubtedly warned him. But his ego needed the main stage. And no competition from other performers.
I was on the VIP grassy knoll from about 3:45 to 5:15. Hey, figured I wouldn't sleep through it anyway. I was open to enjoying something new that I normally would never have sought out. I was disgusted by the lack of professionalism from not only West but Superfly. Admittedly, I couldn't see that the crowd was throwing things, from my vantage point, which made announcements and explanations a bit more necessary as well (if in fact he cut things short due to the crowd). Very little effort could have gone a great distance toward keeping the crowd happier and informed. That is what truly disappoints.
Definitely the biggest slap in the face: not one word to the crowd. And he only would have needed to utter one word: "Bonnaroooooooooooo!" That would have probably made it [mostly] all better for me. Just an acknowledgment that he was even aware of where the f*#k he was, and wanted to be part of that.
Nothing. Effing nothing.
This was exactly my complaint. I was expecting an ego-maniac, sure. I was not expecting an "artist" who refused to acknowledge the people that stayed up past sunrise for him after standing and watching concerts all day long. He could have said "Good Morning Bonnaroo!" when he first came out. He could have even uttered a small "thank you" at the end. ANYTHING.
If he's apparently pissed at Pearl Jam, fine. But what did we do? We didn't decide to play until 1 AM. We (some of us) waited for two fucking hours for him. We deserved some acknowledgment.
Going to a concert where the performer doesn't once acknowledge the crowd is a useless concert. I would have much rather watched Chali 2na and Galactic (I'm SO PISSED) and gone to bed. I could have watched the Glow in the Dark concert online.
Don't we all go to concerts to hear great music and interact with our favorite artists? Kanye's set was like we were watching him through one-way glass.
If he's apparently pissed at Pearl Jam, fine. But what did we do? We didn't decide to play until 1 AM. We (some of us) waited for two quacking hours for him. We deserved some acknowledgment.
Forgot to mention, there was a rumor floating around that Pearl Jam's people got into it with Kanye's people, leading to more delay. Some sort of throw down. I heard it from a guy who, while not security, did have a walkie talkie. Completely unconfirmed except for that statement, but given that the Entertainment Weekly blog of Bonnaroo mentioned that Kanye's people had blocked even Infinity pass people from coming back stage, there may be no way at all of confirming, anyway.
About that, yeah. He came on at 4:27am by my clock, and was offstage sometime around 5:25-5:30.
I got an email from the Lollapalooza list today, with the schedule. They've got him headlining Sunday to close out the festival. At least we can check out Nine Inch Nails (I guess he can tolerate competition?) and/or leave early.

Sorry if this was already discussed, but Eddie Vedder started to make a joke about Kanye or along those lines at the end of their set and he sort of stopped himself. Anyone else hear this?

The way I understood it, he was saying that now was the time to take what you were going to take to enjoy Kanye's show. Not a diss at all, more of a timing reminder for people looking to become electric.

^^^ Yeah, I don't remember he exact quote, he said something like, now is the time to take it so y'all peak at just the right time for the Kanye glow in the dark... something like that... people laughed, but if anyone really followed Eddie's advice, well... we all know how THAT would've worked out

okay fine, I didn't want to start this here but I'm going for it.
I love hip-hop/rap but I also love the jack johnson stuff and metal too.
I was irked about the kanye vs jack johnson time slot, but when kanye was moved to the late night I noticed a very big and unfair problem.
There are four days of music but somehow if you are a hip-hop fan you have to pick between talib kweli/lupe/chali 2na or kanye. all the black rappers played at the same time slot.
Talib is every bit as important as kanye, if not more so. plus kanye and talib are buddies, as kanye produced the "get by" track for him.
Kanye decided he was not going to compete with his rap brethren, thus if you watched the other hip-hop shows then you were the winner that night because you got to to see all the hip-hop and it finished just in time for kanye's perfectly delayed set.
Also, Talib kweli is HUGE in rap, not white people hit-list ipod rap but afrocentric we need to help ourselves rap. but SOMEHOW talib only get 45 minutes? same with lupe.
Kanye response was, "hey, if you only want talib and lupe to play for an hour, then don't get pissed at me for only playing an hour."
However, he can say he did this as it would make liable for any monetary damages incurred by his intentional delay.
As long as the delays are typically of the industry (set-up, stage, audio/video problems) he is not liable for any damage since it is beyond his control.
Also, if he started sh*t about the way rappers were being treated/exploited at roo then it would just add more fuel to the fire that rappers shouldn't be at roo anyways, and they just cause trouble.
Finally, I say exploited because of the set times and lengths. not that the fans were exploiting rap, we like it. but the organizers obviously arranged the sets just so they could inlcude the acts to draw customers to roo that wouldn't have come (same is true for metallica by the way), the did not invite kanye/lupe/talib becuase they value and respect hip-hop, the promoters only saw dollar signs.

the logic:
If kanye is going to pull some sh*t, then it has to be consistent with what we (people and media) expect him to do.
We expect kanye to be arrogant, and selfish, so as long as his actions agree with that then we don't need to digg any deeper for the reason.
Kanye is an as*hole, he did what he did because he is an as*hole. case closed. NO WAY MAN!!
1) repeatedly everyone is saying that kanye's crew would have known how long it would take to setup.
That is absolutely true, a star of that calliber and resources has the ability to get his show done on time, and even if it ran late it wouldn't be two hours. Anyone who has seen shows or performed in them knows that two hour delays don't happen.
2) kanye or his people should have addressed the crowd.
of course they should have, anybody with half a brain knows that, including kanye and his peeps. but if you are trying to make sure everything thinks you are an as*, and make sure no one figures out what you are doing then you stay in character. not addressing the crowd is almost comic. its over the top, its a sign of someone trying to hard to sell the I'm an as* idea.
3) kanye wanted everyone else to stop playing before he went on.
if you believe this then you will never think that he only wanted the hip-hop bands to finish first. if EVERYONE has to stop, then of course the hip-hop bands finish first.
4) kanye only played for an hour
this is the nail in the coffin. he switched to a night set to put on a spectacular show, as part of that show, he demanded a two-hour stage set-up. Now, I don't know how many of you are performers (I am, and have been for over 10 years)
but if you move your set to late night, and you set-up for two hours, as* or not, one thing for sure is going to happen. when you hit the stage, you are going to bring, and bring it hard. your ego demands that you show the crowd your the boss, you've got the big plan, now let me prove it by rocking your face!!
he quit 1 hour into it, clearly showing that he didn't demand all that time to put on a huge show, hell he only played half his set, but he played exactly the same length as the other hip-hop shows. it was definitely a giant middle finger to bonnaroo saying treat all of us rappers alike, don't just give big sets and time slots the rappers white kids like the most.

Man my logic is tight!
Here's where I think your logic is loose: Being treated equal to other rappers and being treated like the headliner you're billed as conflict with one another. You can't have both in that position.
^^ Any an all of this could have been addressed prior to his signing a contract to play Bonnaroo. Don't change the rules of the game after you start playing.

you are right about the headlining part, headliners don't get treated like small potatos. but why put three top notch hip hop acts at the same time as the hip-hop headliner.
imagine if metallica was at the same time as mastodon
or chromeo at the same time as mstrkrft
or phil lesh at the same time as widespread. it would never happen at bonnaroo.

Because the hip-hop headliner wanted to change the time of his set?
Post by Sköldpadda on Jun 17, 2008 12:36:42 GMT -5
Yeah, I hadn't even thought about that. Kanye put himself into competition with the other rappers, if it was in fact his idea to be on the main stage at that time.
Post by whykanyewaslate on Jun 17, 2008 12:39:48 GMT -5
given that its a night show, yes he wanted to play at night. so the roo mgmt, goes okay mr. west you want night-time, you got it, here's your night time set, now go compete with your buddies for the crowds attention.
Again, 4 days, 8 hours of night each day, thats 32 hours of night. but, he plays the two hours where the other hip hop guys are playing.
