"step right up" immediately comes to mind.
and "anywhere i lay my head" seems fitting for roo..thought thats kinda a more chilled out tune..not sure how hutz and claypool and them would pull that one off.
My question is Tom Waits has so many beautiful slow songs, by I can't imagine how a vocalist like Hütz would tackle them. Maybe a guest singer.
thats what im saying..
i would seriously crap my pants if i could hear heart of saturday night. or christmas card form a hooker, or even burma shave..but NOONE should be allowed to even attempt those.
(actually the only singer i ever liked to cover slower waits tunes is E from Eels.)
Innocent when you dream What's he building in there Whistling Past the Graveyard God's Away On Business Flower's Grave Don't go Into that Barn Pasties & a G-String Ice Cream Man
I must admit I haven't read this entire thread so don't kill me if this has already been covered but Eddie Vedder is a huge Tom Waits fan. Before all of his solo shows Tom Waits was the entire soundtrack. He covered a bunch of Tom Waits songs and even told a story along these lines when the crowd in Berkeley kept shouting stuff out...
"Tom Waits once told me that silence was like a blank sheet of paper. When you want to get your thoughts down on a sheet of paper you don't want a bunch of sh*t written all over it, just a nice, clean sheet of paper"
Anyways maybe there could be some sort of connection at Roo but who knows, just a thought.
So, let's say the Superjam, whoever it is, whether Waits is there or not, is a group of musicians playing Tom Waits songs. What are some of the songs you all think would be played?
Lie To Me Road To Peace Top Of The Hill Make It Rain Low Down Pasties and a G-String Little Drop of Poison Cemetery Polka

Filipino Box Spring Hog would be awesome to see. I'd love to see a mix of new and old Waits tunes. Dark and also more mellow stuff. Old 55 would be sick.
I could see Vedder coming out possibly. Also.......it'd be nice to see some other songs (perhaps a Primus or Floyd or Band song too) in the superjam.
why is this thread a global announcement??? It seems that everything in this thread is just rumor/speculation at this point. I'm just confused as to why its an announcement on every single board and not just a sticky in the music lounge.... unless the mods know something we dont know...???

Because Tom Waits is just that important. End of story. lol.

So who's coming to the Knoxville show? I'm so excited! I can't believe he would even come here...I figured he would go to Nashville but this is better.
Also, the people of superjam covering Tom Waits sounds more plausible than him actually playing the fest. I really don't like the idea of someone from Metallica trying to cover Waits...Makes me sick to the stomach. Really...covering Tom Waits should not be done by anyone, especially not anyone from Metallica.

If I ever heard the Heart of Saturday Night or the Ghosts of Saturday Night live, I could die a happy man.

Loads of artists cover Tom Waits and many have had hits when covering a song from him. I couldn't disagree more.
I know loads of artists cover Tom...People cover songs by many bands all the time and make them hits. But to cover Tom Waits and it be a hit is very rare. I don't think he should be covered though. That's just my opinion...you can argue with me all day about it, but that's how I see it.
And you gave me a - karma...wow. Didn't know it hit home with you that bad...
Maybe we will both be able to hear our favorite Waits songs at Roo this year. Hammet is a little more well rounded music wise then you might think. He has always had interesting taste in music.
John: We don't even understand our own music Spider: It doesn't, does it matter whether we understand it? At least it'll give us . . . strength John: I know but maybe we could get into it more if we understood it
I could live with it, but it would change my scheduling. If it is just those three, or if Tom is there I will camp out through the headliner to get close, and not move till it is over. If Scarlett is there I will check it out, but from the back where I can go to other shows at will.
