I just heard that new Built to Spill....you guys are right, it is pretty damn good. Is there absolutely no chance of them playing Roo? I know the lead singer had an illness that pushed their tour back to the fall, but he's better, right? It just seems like it would be a good fit.
"We've all been raised on television to believe that one day we'd all be millionaires, movie gods, and rock stars. But we wont, and we're slowly learning that fact & we're very, very pissed off......."
My vote is for Gnarls Barkley - St. Elsewhere. I also heard they played an awesome set at Coachella this year too.
You've already heard it? I'd be interested in hearing what you thought of it - especially whose influence was greater between Cee-Lo and Danger Mouse. I was emailing my brother about them - he's a big fan of Cee-Lo's stuff and he's really looking forward to it next week, but I'm hoping to hear more Danger Mouse influence on it.

The new Soul Position Album is pretty damn good, but I would not put it at number one right now. I have only heard the new TV on the Radio two times, but it already seems better than their first album, so on limited plays that one has the potential to edge out the new Lips. But so far I am in the Lips camp. It has definitely been a grower.
Totally agree Aquarium. I was really excited to hear it but it just makes me want to listen to the Soft Bulletin and Yoshimi instead. I know Yoshimi is a hard album to follow up but I thought they would do a better job.

You know, even somewhere on this thread I voted new Flaming Lips, but I was wrong. I haven't touched that album in two weeks. I loved it at first, but then got bored with it pretty quickly. I couldn't stop listening to Yoshimi for months. Just my thoughts.
"Derek Trucks Band - Songlines" is great. Was that in '06 though?
I like the new Flaming Lips, but I wouldn't say it's the best of the year. So far, I'd say Bela Fleck & the Flecktones' The Hidden Land, but I've yet to listen to Stadium Arcadium and Of Whales and Woe.
Stadium Arcadium is pretty outstanding. It's sooooo freakin long, but there aren't really any bad songs. There are 2 or 3 I might skip, but it's really quite good, on the hole.
I'm really underwhelmed by the releases so far this year. The new Yeah Yeah Yeahs and Strokes albums were downright awful. Flaming Lips and Gnarls Barkley are mixed bags. Not great, and definitely nothing new to write home about. Band of Horses sounds suspiciously like watered down MMJ. Tapes N Tapes sounds like everyone. The new Streets album is a little bit of a let down.
So far, the only albums that have really struck me as stellar have been 'Drum's Not Dead' by the Liars and the leaked "Return to Cookie Mountain' by TV on the Radio with the latter being superior by a mile and a half.
There have been some other pretty solid releases this year, but none of have really jumped out at me like those two.
Although the Islands album, 'Return to the Sea' is growing on me. And I still haven't heard the new Springsteen or Willie Nelson albums, though I've heard good things about both...

I thought my vote would go to Belle and Sebastian and I think it kinda still does but I still have not tired of "Ten Silver Drops" by the Secret Machines. Some really great stuff on this album. This may end up getting my vote at the end of the year.
dudezer I am going to agree with your tapes n tapes comment even though i dig that album but not with your comment on the new Strokes being downright awful. Thats a solid album just like the last 2. I at least hope you hated the last 2 so your thoughts line up correctly.

See now, I haven't been able to get into those 2 albums. They're both really wierd(not a bad thing), they just didn't grab me on my first listen. I'm sure I'll get back to them, eventually. The Strokes album is IMHO, thier best one yet. And the new Yeah Yeah Yeahs is alot better then thier last one, which isn't saying much, but I like it. Tapes n Tapes is awesome. I've been listening to that non stop as well as the Band of Horses album, even though they do kinda sound like MMJ or Built to Spill. Which the latter still stands, for me as one of the best, thusfar in 2006. To each thier own tastes.
No. I liked the last two Strokes albums. And the albums don't match up at all. First Impressions of Earth is a departure for the Strokes just like Road to Ruin was a departure for the Ramones. Julian sounds less engaged. His lyrics suck absolute balls. They rip off riffs with even more bravura and pointlessness. At one point they even rip off the chorus to "Camptown Races." I'm told the songs play a lot better live than they do on the album, but saying this album sounds a lot like the other two discounts a lot of things. It discounts the new influences of metal and surf rock. It discounts the longer length of songs. It discounts the new producer. It also assumes the last two albums sound anything like each other, which in my opinion they really don't. 'Room on Fire' sounds a lot different lyrically and musically than 'Is This It?'
Honestly, with the exception of the Yeah Yeah Yeahs new album, no other album this year has gotten a 'WTF' reaction out of me like 'First Impressions of Earth.' It's an album where Nick is going crazy on the guitar and Julian is bored and the rest of the band sounds out of rhythm. It's just a bad album in my opinion. A lot of ideas that go nowhere and were thought of first by someone else. Even the most radically different song, "Ask Me Anything" is a direct ripoff of Stephen Merritt's work as Magnetic Fields. In other words, I couldn't hate this album more if it was released by Limp Bizkit themselves.
