I had never seen Ministry before. I thought it was good. My cousin and her husband are bigger fans and they were disappointed. They believed Al was lip synching, which I couldn't tell from where I was. Thieves is a monster.
fwiw i don't think Al was lip syncing, he just has a heavy effect on his vocals that gives him that "ministry" sound like you hear in the studio records. could tell it was an effect because occasionally the effect would drop out for a second or two and you could hear his unfiltered voice.
That's what I thought too. They were on the floor and I was way up in the seats.
Me: wow, I can’t believe I’ve never seen one of my favorite rappers at a club show before, I’m so excited to see him do an extended set and play a lot of deep cuts. Daniel Brown, verbatim, ending his set 60 minutes after it starts: “I don’t know why anyone would want to see someone rap for an hour and 30 minutes.”
5.5/four tet, daphni b2b floating points, avalon emerson 5.12/neil young 5.19/mannequin pussy 5.21/serpentwithfeet 5.25/hozier 6.12-16/bonnaroo 6.28/goose 6.29/goose 9.17/the national + the war on drugs 9.23/sigur ros 9.27-29/making time 10.17/air
So mystery set wasn't Cale and Co play VU, but he jammed with Mercury Rev for Picasso and then the black angels joined for Sister Ray. Great show, wish it were longer, he didn't come on right at start and then they had to break to set up the Sister Ray thing.
idk why objekt would want to come up to this frozen hell hole on a tuesday night, so happy he did and every other beautiful person who showed up. worked a 13 hour shift and then danced so hard imma just crawl to my bed.
and then to berlin or somewhere, i need more badass dj's in my life

I admit I was a little concerned about the Sleater-Kinney live experience post-Janet. If you haven't seen them yet this tour and are similarly worried, don't be. They sound just as good as they did before, and the new touring members fill the void well. It also feels like they're in a more playful mood, with Carrie and Corin both delivering a lot more stage banter. Both shows I caught this week were excellent.
Didn't mention I saw Thom Yorke at the end of last month, but it kinda goes without saying that he was great and his production was stellar. I had a side view before I sneaked down to an open center seat next to a friend, and I'm glad I did, because the visuals are an essential part of the show.

saw him before his album. does he lean hard into the new one? debating on seeing him in 1/2 arena setup.
fka twigs has tightened up her show so much since primavera.really crazy how witnessing some sounds and stuff go on a stage can communicate so much between the people there. absolutely breathtaking performance. there were these little moments of vulnerabilty, strength, fun, sensuality, pain from her that just cut through everyone, and communicated stuff that its hard to do because we're human. the album is good, but live its really art, dance is super cool especially when its in relation into those those off kilter sounds with nicolas jaar in the mix.

Leans a lot into both Anima and Tomorrow's Modern Boxes since he never really did a proper tour for TMB. Some Eraser, Suspiria, and Atoms for Peace material sprinkled in as well.

Did Ministry/Primus/Slayer on Monday and Wilco on Weds.
Missed the first few songs of Ministry which was a bummer cause Stigmata is my favorite of theirs. Still they were fucking hardcore, as to be expected. Primus played a great weird hour set.i appreciated they went with some deep cuts in addition My Name Is Mud, Jerry and Wynona.
Slayer are legends. Never been the biggest thrash metal fan but figured I had to take my last shot. They put on a great show that was relentlessly punishing. Between the lights, fire and thundering rhythm section at times it felt akin to directly staring at a thunderstorm.
Wilco was a great visit across their discography. Made me appreciate a few songs like Random Name Generator and Bull Black Nova. I still think a few of the new tracks arent THAT interesting. But some like Everyone Hides and Love is Everywhere are really good. Thrilled to see 28 tracks including Im Always In Love and a bunch from Being There.

Saw Bloc Party perform "Silent Alarm" last night, and my experience with Bloc Party has always been similar - great crowd, mediocre performance. They did it back to front, which worked up the crowd to the heavy hitters so they didn't get burnt out early. But I feel the same way I did after seeing Interpol do "Turn on the Bright Lights", where having heard their tour de force album, I now don't feel the need to see them ever again.
Looking forward to Angel Olsen in a few weeks closing out a very solid concert year.
Saw Madeon tonight and left genuinely shocked at how good it was? He does the cheeseball EDM thing so well and the visuals were more psychedelic than expected with borderline Gapar Noé-style lyrical titles which was cool.

he's always been one of my favorite cheesy ones (like id rather have a full madeon set than that porter/madeon thing)
-During “I Need Help Immediately” (?) a group of people opened up nearly the entire floor of the club for a pit. No one jumped in except for one guy who kind of slid in, did a few dance moves, and then the song ended and everyone just started cheering wildly. -Before the show started a group of people next to me kept tossing an imaginary ball to a couple on the VIP balcony and every time one of them “threw” it back they kept pretending the ball was getting bigger and bigger -Tony Velour’s DJ opening with “Come Clean” by Hilary Duff and the crowd going nuts

Saw Angel Olsen a couple nights ago and holy fuck, she's on another level right now. I've seen her a few times dating back to "Burn Your Fire for No Witness", and those sets were solid, but nothing like this current tour. Go see it if you have the opportunity.
