Yeah, me too. I loved Radiohead, and it's easily Top 5 for me this year so far. I figured someone would put up a Top 10 or favorite sets of 2017 thread. I was going to do it, but I haven't run out of room in my sig line. For me, it would probably be Sigur Ros, STS9 Axe, Tycho Buku, Radiohead, GrizMatiK or Dave Chapelle's Juke Jive so far.
I'm not going to go into much detail about it since Esteban discussed it a few posts above me, but I saw Sigur Ros in Atlanta last night. It was my first time seeing them and even though I'm not a fan of the Fox Theatre and can't pronounce most of the songs, it was a great experience.

Anyone ever see Jonsi without Sigur Ros? I caught him at Moog several years ago not knowing much about it and I found myself with my mouth open in amazement. Full on mouthbreath. He did four encores that night, though I had to leave to take pics of Thievery Corporation and missed them. Those Moog lineups were so stacked. Last year I caught Sigur Ros at the same venue (Thomas Wolfe in Asheville) and was amazed yet again. I'm wondering if I liked the Jonsi thing better because I was caught off guard or if it's legitimately better.
Nice. No way that show would disappoint any of their fans. It wasn't my ideal/wish set list, but that's not even a complaint. That second set is really something else, and I think the journey through the first one sets that up. You see all that rigging and an occasional flash here or there, but you know they are being minimalist with it until after intermission. Then it's on. None of that is meant as a slight to the first set at all which was very much about the music. I hope that anyone who has the opportunity to see them on this leg is able to go.
The thing that differentiates the mini Hangout set from the full shows is that they only did a couple songs on the minimalist part of the set, then in a blink of an eye they were at the front half of the stage playing their "bigger" music. I was totally engrossed in both parts of the set and loved how unexpected yet seamless the transition was. And then 25 mins into the show it abruptly came to an end. So grateful for what I saw and looking forward to someday seeing a full show. I can't get them out of my mind 4 days later...
I caught Jean-Michel Jarre's show tonight. I might have a soft spot for classic electronic, but man he put on a good show! He played to a very empty arena (I was one of many to win free tickets). The visuals were breathtaking, and the music was timeless. If you're able to catch one of his remaining shows, I'd highly recommend you do so.

Saw Bon Iver last night at MPP. Was basically 90 minutes of heaven. His band, his lights, video screens. I told my wife that this is why I love music so much, it just soothes me incredibly. Gonna be gassed today at work because I drove directly from the airport coming back from a business trip but totally worth it in every way.
For you lucky few seeing them this summer, you're gonna have a great time

My husband has most of his stuff on vinyl. It's sad that so few people know who he is, But they know who Marshmallow is.

Maybe instead of putting out things like Oxygene and doing free light shows in various cities, he should have thought about Friend Baubles.
Any of my Austinites (Austinians?) going to Ty Segall? I want to but I can't convince anyone to make the drive from Houston with me.
I'm goin. Was just coming to post about it actually hah. I was excited about it a week ago but now that they've since added Christian Bland & the Revelators and Meatbodies to the lineup, i'm ecstatic. May still hit up the $5 Meatbodies aftershow at Hotel Vegas but the free Crocodile Tears gig in the inside stage of Stubbs sounds intriguing.
I always thought it could either be Austinites or Austonians?

might still try to make it. really disappointed he didn't have an H date
I've missed every solo show he's done here since i found out about him during sxsw 2014. My friends went to one of his Spiderhouse shows for sxsw that year and i went to Gambino's free Auditorium Shores show. Later realized that Coachwhips played their final show opening for that set, i didn't even know who they were at the time yet. Royally fucked that night up. My friends that went still won't let me live that down.
Then Ty played Mohawk in September that year for Manipulator, missed that too for work. 2015, sort of made up for those when i saw him with Fuzz at Levitation and FFF. He played with the Muggers at Mohawk again in February 2016, missed that also. Then he was supposed to play with them again at Levitation, but it rained out and he never did a make up show for it.

So this is a loooong time coming for me haha
This will be the forth time that I knowingly have missed him since 2014. I am going to make it to a show one of these days.
Ty Segall, Meatbodies, Christian Bland and the Revelators, The Zoltars at Stubbs 5/27
Got there during the Zoltars set. They had some okay songs but they all sounded too similar and lacked the kind of energy that the final two bands would provide, but I would see them again in a smaller venue. They seemed kinda nervous because a lot of people showed up for this.
Christian Bland and The revelators are arguably better than his other band, The Black Angels. This band seems to be his outlet for the heavier experimental psychedelic stuff, whereas TBA are more pop (like Floyd/Stones pop) or formulaic. Last time I saw him with this group was at Hotel Vegas during SXSW 2015 and he did a few Syd Barrett Pink Floyd covers. This time was all their own songs.
Meatbodies are quickly becoming one of my favorite bands. They remind me of the early days of Qotsa, Black Sabbath, Buzzcocks, Thee Oh Sees, and Ty Segall of course. This Stubbs show was absolutely killer. So loud and energetic. Not many bands can follow them up and do it justice. Only a real American hero such as Ty Segall himself can do such.
Which brings me to Ty. They opened with the combo of Break a Guitar and Freedom, the first two tracks from his new album. One can't help but feel like they're experiencing something that will be reveled years from now, almost like seeing The Doors play a warehouse in SF in 67, or Pink Floyd play a small London club in 65. The band he has right now (appropriately called The Freedom Band) consists of Mikal Cronin, Emmett Kelly, Charles Moothart, and Ben Boye, all members of other awesome SF/LA garage rock bands. By the second song I had already worn myself out from the pit and puked up my Lone Star under my shirt so no one would notice. No one noticed. One of the most perfectly executed candid hurls of this millennium. It was truly an epic show. Going to be hard for any show for me that isn't a headliner to top it in 2017.
Unfortunately during Ty my phone freaked and died even tho I had like 28% battery, so I couldn't get any video of them covering Fire on the Mountain during the outro of Feel.
After that I headed over to Hotel Vegas for the Meatbodies late gig of the night. Despite my worries, there was no one line at all. Their first show was great, this show was a party. They played all the songs from the first gig, plus like 5 more hits. It got to the point where they were just asking the crowd for requests. The venue let them play as long as they wanted. It was probably the loudest show I've ever seen. I think I have tinnitus now, my ears feel like they're stuffed with cotton with a sharp & high pitched-ring cutting through the middle. Totally worth it. This was like seeing some legendary band like Ramones or Buzzcocks in CBGB in '78. If anyone ever tells you rock is dead, show them Meatbodies and Ty Segall.
TL/DR: Ty Segall, Meatbodies, Christian Bland all crushed it at Stubbs. Meatbodies put on an epic and ferocious late night show at Hotel Vegas. May now have tinnitus. Rock/Punk definitely ain't dead.

Michael Kiwanuka was pretty solid last night. No horns or female back up singers made some songs more anemic than their album counterparts, and I wasn't a fan of Cold Little Heart being played at a slower tempo, but the One More Night and Black Man in a White World dance parties made up for it. For $20 CAD, definitely worth it.
Saw Tool last night in Hamilton. No Eulogy for us but still a great show. The visuals for Descending are great, too; makes me excited for new music, whenever the hell it comes out.
It's the middle of Vivid Sydney here, and I saw two of the bands booked for the festival this week - Air on Tuesday, and Nick Murphy last night (Sat).
Both shows were great, but holy shit, Nick Murphy blew me away. I would say second only to my amazing run of Patti Smith shows in April as my favourite show of the year. I was smack dead front row centre, and it was perfect. I have been a fan for a while, and I've seen him before, but I have a much deeper respect for him after last night. That voice... that style. He debuted his new EP during the show, which sounds great. He was clearly very humbled to have sold out three nights at the most famous venue in his country, during their biggest two weeks of the year. Now... when can I see him again?!
So this weekend I took my girlfriend to Sigur Ros. The only songs I knew by them were Olsen Olsen and Festival, and then some other songs on their top songs for Spotify. Plus I watched a couple of videos online. Everything I saw made it seem like it'd be a nice peaceful concert, which is something my girlfriend would really enjoy so I said hey I bought the cheapest tickets to this band I've read about and you're going. We got there, and I'm not sure if it didn't sell well or what, but they upgraded our tickets down a couple of floors in the theatre, so it started off nice.
Before we went, we ate a lot of corn, as I figured the concert would be nice and peaceful and relaxing. And that's exactly how the first two songs started, nice and calm. Then the third and fourth songs came, which looks like there were Glósóli and E-Bow according to the setlist. Holy fucking shit. I was not expecting anything that loud and intense, we both looked at each other with our jaws on the floor in amazement. My heart was beating so fast (probably because of the corn) and I was like this wasn't what I expected, I'm sorry. But she was like Perd I love this, oh my god. I felt like such a noob the whole time, people around us were going as nuts as I've ever heard a crowd just based off the first couple of notes and they could tell what song was being played and start clapping and hollering, and I was just thinking oh jeeze it's happening again. Don't even get me started on the lights/visuals. Normally I can handle strobe lights, but those were so intense I had to shut my eyes for a couple of seconds multiple times (damn corn). At the intermission I jokingly looked at her and said so have you had enough, should we go? And she laughed and said hell no, we're staying to the end. The concert was amazing. This band is amazing. I need to actually listen to them, and I definitely will be seeing them if I ever get the chance again. I just can't believe how they could make such beautiful and intense sounds in the same concert with only three people on stage. At the end of the concert I had to stay seated for a couple of minutes because my heart was racing and I couldn't believe what I just witnessed. I'm not sure if I ever clapped as loud as I did when they came out to take their bows. Holy moly
My Dad and I went to see The Turtles "Happy Together" tour in Biloxi on Friday. Lots of other bubblegum psych/pop opening bands were listed so I was wondering how the logistics would play out.
Basically, there was a house band and the remaining/living/main people from the bands would come out and play like 20 minutes and then the next ones would come out within 5 mins.
Worked out perfectly as I didn't care much about the opening bands so I didn't need to hear deep cuts. They all came out and played their songs that had us like "ohhhhh shit, THAT is the band that wrote that." Kinda blew me away that I knew every single song played only knowing who the song belonged to like 2/15 prior to that show.
Openers were: The Archies > The Cowsills >The Box Tops > The Association >Chuck Negron (Three Dog Night) > The Turtles
The Turtles were cool but did not play long enough. Oh well we got free tix. Was cool seeing Flo & Eddie in person, that was the main reason I wanted to go. They did play Zappa's Peaches En Regalia (2nd version from the Live @ Fillmore East record) which was pretty sweet. At the very end they were like "we had so much fun with the opening bands let's do it again!" and one by one all the openers came out and did a verse from their big single and then everyone sang Happy Together reprise. Cheesy fun.
sigur rós last night was absolutely beautiful. i'm not sure why they didn't book a theater, but i'm glad it was at least moved inside. i can't imagine seeing that out on a lawn like originally planned. i looked up the setlist this morning to find a particular song, and found this instead.

Saw Jason Isbell first night back with the 400 unit on Saturday, best show I have seen so far this year. 5th or 6th time seeing him, and it was easily the best one yet for me. His vocals seem to get even more impressive as time goes on, and it was nice to see the extended jams with the 400 unit. Didn't have much of that when he was touring his solo albums. Crowd was on point, everybody knew every word to every song throughout the night. Closing out with Whipping Post was def the icing on the cake.
Shout out garageland for the Lee Ranaldo, Steve Gunn, Meg Baird recommendation to put me over the fence.
Great sets from all three, and the collab at the end was great. Gunn might've been the best acoustic guitar player I've seen live, and Lee might've been the most intense acoustic guitar player I've seen live.

MMJ last night was amazing! The transitions between songs were awesome and closing out with Phone Went West was just too perfect. The first timers that went with us had a blast. All around magical night me and my group!
Finally crossed my #1 off my bucketlist with King Crimson in Denver last Saturday. Amazing show at a half sold venue.
Fucking right. I don't know anything after Thrak. I didn't follow any of the Deconstruktion (sp?) albums or really anything else they've done after Thrak. I'm going to have to go look at the setlist.
