That prince show was fucking amazing oh my. The last 40 minutes were especially great. Ended up playing till 10:15 and it was exactly as I expected. This dude has to play Bonnaroo.
I saw one of the most surreal and psychedelic shows of my life last night... and I've seen some stuff, maaaan. It was a tribute to David Lynch (and, I guess by proxy, Angelo Badalamenti). It started off with a man sawing a log under a spotlight, and somehow only got more Lynchian from there on out.
It was awesome, though. Everybody was so on point. They did all the biggest songs from David Lynch's movies: Blue Velvet, In Heaven, In Dreams, the Twin Peaks theme, the Angelo Badalamenti scores, and so on. Featuring Mick Harvey (of the Bad Seeds), Cibo Matto, Sarah Blasko (I never hear Inforoo people talk about her, but she's gotten quite big over here), supplemented with a (particularly gorgeous) harp, violins, synths, saxophone, trumpet, flugelhorn, even a gong... the list goes on. I kinda wish I could see this one again.
I really like your posts and your music knowledge.
Cheers, Monster. FWIW, you seem rather knowledgeable yourself, so I always pay particularly close attention to your posts in Now Playing.

That was from the 8 o clock show on Sunday. It was amazing. I read he stopped around 9:45 on the first Saturday show and I know a lot of the time he closes with purple rain and at 9:45 last night sure enough he was playing purple rain. I was like damn I'm shocked he didn't play when doves cry, sign o the times or I would die for you. So people started leaving after purple rain. Then bam that crazy little purple bastard showed back up a couple minutes later and went nuts kicking it off with when doves cry, then a DJ type set, dancing around playing bass, doing some legendary funk covers. I would have left after purple rain thinking that was a great show. But him doing what he did when he came back out turned it into an unbelievable show. So glad it worked out and I ended up at that Sunday show.

Considering you've found the need to respond to my threads as if you are threatened by me I offer you some peace my confused counterpart. May you find peace in your restless soul.

Very jealous of your show getting "Thank You" and "Play That Funky Music." Glad you got to go man!

I would say it was either a half hour or 45 minutes long. There was a decent amount of empty seats around me at that time. Most people stayed it didn't die or anything but I would say I had around ten to fifteen seats just around me that were emptied out by people leaving as he walked off after purple rain.

I guess they were confident on the second night they could conduct the crowd switchover timely is why he played later. I'm not disappointed in the setlist I saw however in hindsight I do now wish we would have got a longer show like the others were.
Went to Hogs for a Cause today which is a bbq pork competition to raise money for childhood cancer. They also now do it in Charleston, SC as well. Lots of unkosher shit like oysters charbroiled with dairy (butter and cheese) and topped with bacon and pork. Thanks to Jabco for that one. Caught some of Toubab Krewe, Wood Brothers and George Porter and Running Pardners. I had to jet out before J Roddy came on, but it was a good day with several thousand people and lots of good food and alcohol. I was supposed to go catch Sonic Bloom (Eric Bloom of Lettuce's side project), but I'm too sun sapped from today. He's apparently living here now, so I'll get to see this project soon. He came out and played a couple of sonG's with Dopapod on Thursday.

I saw Son Lux open for the tUnE-yArDs last night. Both were great but Son Lux stole the show in my opinion. His band was on point the whole night. Dynamics were good, transitions were great, and the whole band was very animated and just seemed to be having a great time. Will for sure be seeing them again the next time I get a chance. Also can't wait for the new album.
Saw Atmosphere Saturday night, it was a good time (especially if you really know their lyrics)Everyone there was a huge fan so they were eating out of Slug's hand. They did however do nearly the exact same set as the did a couple days before in Gainesville, so, if you see them on tour, it's probably not worth it to see them at Roo if they conflict with someone else you want to see. I must say though, if you are a fan of Atmosphere and don't see them at a different stop on tour and there isn't a major conflict, this should be a most see for you.
Went to Alt-J and Phantogram at Madison Square Garden last night. Absolutely incredible show. I've seen Phatogram twice before, both in festival settings; and wasn't really a fan. I enjoy listening to them on Spotify, maybe it was seeing them in the afternoon previously, but they didn't click with me. Last night that changed though. They completely blew me away. I hope I get to see them again.
Alt-J, wow absolutely incredible. Honestly, one of the best live shows I have ever seen. These guys are going to be headlining major festivals on the next go around. It really was a mind blowing show. Their cover of Lovely Day by Bill Withers was incredible to see live. The whole set covered the gambit of what you'd want to see at a show. It was chill and intense all at once. I wish I could relive the whole night again; which is always the sign that a show was good. Can't wait to see them again at Osheaga.
Saw the Sam Holt "Remembering Mikey" tribute tour closer in Mobile. Felt like I was at a 90's Panic show, which was great because I missed the bus on that for real.

that was my fifth phantogram show and it may have been the best one yet. totally agree that after that, alt-j can easily be headlining after one more album. managed to sneak some friends down to the floor which is always fun at the garden. still can't believe how amazing both bands were in such a big venue. I keep watching videos on my phone over and over again.

Alt-J just announced an outdoor show on a pier in Philly this September. I will definitely be making the commute down for that. That show was so awesome.
This is one I shall be remembering fondly many years from now, when I'm pinchin' booties in the nursing home. With all due respect to the Shakes, who have stepped their game up since 2012 (with help from the keyboardists and backup singers), Charles Bradley and his Extraordinaires stole the show. Before the show started, I was wishing I was just a few spaces over and directly in front of the mic, but no... I was in the exact spot the Universe had intended for me to be. I think I was Charles' muse for the evening, because he kept gesturing to me and making extended eye contact through every song as he poured his soul out to me. It was that beautiful, elusive feeling that a performer is singing to you alone, yet you still feel deeply connected to everyone around you.
No cross-band sit-ins surprisingly - but that's okay, because I already feel so spoiled after hearing two of the most brilliant voices in one night. New top ten GOAT material.
I saw Milky Chance on Sunday night at the HOB in Boston. They sounded great, but there was something off about the crowd. Can't put my finger on it exactly, just not a ton of people super into it I guess.

I got some free 3 day passes for my roommate and I for a local fest here in phoenix this past weekend, and it was pretty great.
we secured a babysitter to pick up our other roommate from day care on Friday, and we both took half days to get downtown a little early. we got there are Robert Delong was starting and hung out in the free wine tasting tent/shade for his set. It was enjoyable, but not really my thing. I liked how he incorporated live drum/percussion and vocal stuff into his songs. STRFKR was after that, and they were pretty much what I expected. Nothing really stood out beyond what I had heard on the albums, but it wasn't bad by any means. The sun was starting to set and we just kinda hung out in the grass(!!! my front and backyard is all rocks, so this was nice). Grabbed some beers and then secured a good spot for Portugal. The Man. They put on an excellent quacking show. They opened with an abbreviated purple yellow red and blue. We got Day Man>So American about mid set, as well as Oasis' Don't Look Back in Anger. They mostly played stuff from their most recent 3 albums. The vocals were spot on, he sounded great and the whole band seemed pretty loose and jammy up there. Lots of segues and noise interludes. It was pretty great. The closed up with Another Brick in the Wall>Purple yellow red and blue. They came back out saying "we thought we were done but we can't tell time. we have about 2 more minutes so we are gonna play another one" and then they kicked into "Sleep forever" which morphed into a Hey Jude sing along to end the set. I was very impressed, it had a very "headlining" feel to the set. I felt bad for passion pit who had to follow that up. I'm not a huge passion pit fan, but I thought there show was pretty good. All I kept thinking the whole time though was that they should have played before PtM. It seems weird to end the night on these dancy pop songs, when there were just epic guitar jams right before it...felt kind of like an energy let down. I also find it really, really weird that they use "Take a Walk" as their fist-pumping crowd rallying set closer, and then the lyrics are about dude's losing their business and trust funds and shiz. Just seems a little incongruous. The crowd was really into though, the whole show that is. Regardless of my personal feelings about the music, it just all felt like a bit of a let down after PtM.
we got there saturday in time to catch the end of break science. They were exactly what I expected. It was mid afternoon and, my car thermomter was 101 when we parked. The crowd was kinda small, and I think they were a bit pandering to the small contingent of bros raging up at the front. Real estate played next and they were as boring live as they are on record. So we went out to the car to get some sandwiches and beers. Trombone Shorty was next, and he probably played my favorite set of the weekend. It was just funky as all hell. The crowd had filled in quite a bit by the time he started and everybody was dancing. In fact I thought the crowds in general all weekend were pretty great; they seemed to be a bit older than a normal festy crowd; not as many young whipper snappers (though the roommate and I did have to call the med tent people on some dude passed out and breathing funky in the food truck area; he was wasty face). Trombone shorty did a cool little blues/bass solo interlude which I thought was pretty cool, changing it up from the new orleans funk. they also did a mashup of Limp Bizket/Big Tymers (rollin'/ get your roll on) which was hilarious, perplexing, but still pretty awesome. They ended with a five man drum solo around the kit, which could have been a disaster but was actually a pretty good multi-rhythm jam. Phantogram played after, so it was a big shift in stylistic gears. I'd only caught a part of their set from way in the back at bonnaroo a few years ago, so I was excited about seeing them again and I wasn't disappointed. She has a beautiful, and powerful voice. Some of the songs they went into some space-noise territory, and I thought that was pretty cool, though I wish they would have pushed it a little bit further. It was still a great show, and I recommend checking them out if you like them at all. Thievery Corporation was the headliner, and we were able to move way on up to the front; a lot of people seemed to be there more for phantogram. Thievery did a full band set, with horn, Garza on production, couple drummers/guitar/ the works. They useda rotating cast multiple singers throughout the night, a couple dudes from jamaica handling their dub stuff, a couple different women who sang beautifully, an MC who did a couple rap songs. They brought the funk/dub/soul/hip hop, had the whole crowd dancing and skanking, and played for nearly 2 hours. I was worried it was going to be a DJ set and it overwhelmed my expectations. I wish we had been able to go to the aftershows, because it was Rob Garza's birthday and they kept saying to come party with them. But babysitters (and aftershows) ain't cheap.
Sunday was a relax and hang out kind of day. We saw Karl Denson, who can still blow his horn pretty darn goodlike. We set up a blanket and lay in the shade for the rest of the day, listening to Trampled by Turtles vacillate between fast boot stompin bluegrass and more downtempo country ballads from their new record. I love staring at the clouds and listening to bluegrass, so I enjoyed it. Beats antique surprised me in a good; I have trouble making it through a whole album, but their live show was engaging and entertaining (and the belly dancers help). They got me up and shaking my ass, and I thought it was pretty great. WSMFP closed out the fest. They only had one set, but played for almost 2.5 hours. It was heavy on older stuff (six or seven off ST and Space Wrangler alone), opened with space wrangler>tall boy. got Airplane(!!) my second over all and first in about 8 years. JoJo's piano was heavy in the mix and he was ON. dunno if it was our location or what, but I felt like he was really taking charge of the jams and stepping up on his solos, both on keys and organ. Jimmy Herring, thankfully, was restrained but effective and exciting; there wasn't too much wankery to get bored. When they started up protein drink/sewing machine we started walking to the car. I dunno why that combo is so damn popular, but I think they have played it at the last 6 or so shows I've been to. Just too much. But we heard the encore, blue indian and taildragger, on the walk to the car, which is good enough for me.
Over all it was a fun little festival; there are no bad spots in the crowd and only about 3k people or so. With the screen, you can even see the band from the beer/wine tasting lines so you are never far from the music. Panic had been in Vegas for two nights prior, so there were a lot of road warriors who made the drive down, and the crowd was noticeably older on sunday. One of the sponsors was Nordstrom, which I thought was kinda weird, but they were showing off their "festival line" or whatever. Lots of families came, and were playing with their kids in the back, I'm glad we didn't do this, it seems like it would be a nightmare. Beer was cheap, tickets were cheaper, and almost all of the shows were enjoyable, if not downright awesome.
I saw Milky Chance on Sunday night at the HOB in Boston. They sounded great, but there was something off about the crowd. Can't put my finger on it exactly, just not a ton of people super into it I guess.
I was at this show too! I thought the show was awesome...their lighting and stage was perfect for the kind of band they are....my friends and I were totally into it but we were kind of doing our own thing in the back...but I would definitely see them again
Tobacco w/The Stargazer Lillies and New Fumes Mohawk - Austin, TX 4/1/2015
Such a good show, glad I got to see Tobacco again. Enjoyed both the opening acts, but nothing mind blowing.
Tobacco started his set out with a video from Ted Nugent "making the world safe for electric guitar players". He basically hunted a keyboard with a shotgun, to ensure the world was safe for guitar players.
After that, Tobacco launched into his set. I really do love the videos he plays for his songs, they fit so perfectly. It's a weird collection of old VHS and Betamax tapes that mainly seem to focus around workout videos, having sex with aliens (check my second snap video for a quick example), and just anything strange and out there.
Only bad thing about the show is he only played for an hour. And the venue still had another 20 minutes before they had to shut down for curfew. Either way, glad I went, and will always see him given the chance.

Went to the Woodenhead 40th Anniversary show last night at Tip's. My friend and his gf were driving in from Baton Rouge, and we thought there would be opening acts. But it turned out all the other people (Bonearama horns, Papa John Gros, Tommy Malone and Helen Gillet) were actually special guests throughout the night. So we missed the beginning, but it was a 4 hours marathon. Show was great with lots of Dregs-styled Woodenhead songs, some jazz, some Jimmy Robinson playing acoustic guitar, several instrumental tricked out Beatles covers and a superjam with everyone up on stage playing Cashmere. They were our favorite band growing up, and were always super talented. I got a couple of shouts out to "FRAN!" like we always did at their shows back in the day. I ran into Chuck from Tabula Rasa who is an old NOLA progressive/psychedelic sort of Crimson influenced hippie band. He said they had recently found some work from a 2008 tribute show and cut a cd and gave me one which I was jamming to on the way to work this morning. I'm going to be out of town second weekend of jazzfest, but I'd totally catch Woodenhead's fest set if I was there.

Wednesday night: Father John Misty was excellent; so much more enjoyable than his Bonnaroo set. His stage presence and crowd interaction are top notch.
Fun fact: Josh Tillman does not use hair gel, he actually uses paintie moisture, specifically that of Japanese school girls' underpants which he orders off of ebay.
Last night: Holy Hell, The Suffers are incredible. This show was an absolute blast. Their uptempo songs had an infectious blend of wordly funk and afrobeat. The down tempo R&B tracks may have been even better. The lead singer's voice was excellent live - the delivery on the smooth, soulful R&B tracks was great. it was half dance party, half sexy time music.
The feeling I got watching them was similar to when people started seeing St Paul for the first time in small clubs. I actually preferred the Suffers though.
They also had some awesome cover songs in the set.
Dave Maynar bump the Suffers up into the "Must-see" category. I'll stake my non-existent inforoo reputation on it. Is the show indoors or outdoors? Outdoor shouldn't be an issue with how big the band is, but if it's a smallish club it's going to be nuts. I'd recommend getting middle / right side of the crowd; right in between the horns and the vocalist.

They're at The Standard which is a new venue in town. I was at it several times during Big Ears and absolutely loved it. They're playing against The Dirty Guv'nahs which will suck for them because The Guvs have been Knoxville's favorite local band for a long time, but I will at The Suffers. Thanks for the tip!
Edit: This is a picture I posted on my Instagram from the rooftop area at the venue.
Swans were absolutely amazing last night in p'cola. There really is no live music experience even comparable to them.
Was planning on seeing them again tonight in nola, but my fucking alternator died on the way home last night. Can't get spare one until monday, so I'm getting cockblocked on 2 shows this weekend because of that.

Nice, the venue looks awesome. That's definitely a tough act for them to be up against, but I'm confident everyone will be buzzing at the end of the set knowing they made the right choice haha
I have taken a bit of a hiatus from Inforoo, but I just had the most incredible experience and want to share it with yall. I know there is some discussion of MMJ's new album in a few other threads, but I didn't see one for the new album or a general MMJ thread to put this in. I thought about making a new thread for the new album, but for now I will just post this here.
Tonight I was one of 60 lucky fan club folks that got picked to see the first rehearsal show of My Morning Jackets new album The Waterfall. Words can hardly begin to explain the excitement I felt when I got the email letting me know my name was picked, and to follow it up my roomie got the same email a few minutes later (his name was picked for the second night). I had heard the 2 songs they have already released and decided to leave it at that. The album has leaked but I wanted my first taste of the complete album to be from the band on stage, not through a computer on my couch. I read a few reviews of folks that had listened to it and I have to say most of them were dead on.
The Waterfall really seems like a complete album. Start to finish, all the songs flow together. I have to say I was expecting a little more rock, but by no means was I left disappointed. After the last song of The Waterfall was finished, the first thing I thought of was "Wow, this album has a lot of soul" both in the musical funky/soul sense and what the band put into it. Quite frankly, it kicks ass and is downright beautiful. It is also a very dance-able. It could be the experience I had tonight at the show, but to me this is the best album they have done. I am still partial to a lot of songs from It Still Moves, Z, and Evil Urges, but I feel they hit a grand slam putting this album together.
Having not heard most of the songs before and not knowing which songs are named what it is a bit difficult giving a complete review, but a few songs stuck out to me. Part of me wished I had taken some brief notes, but I know I wouldn't have gotten the total experience I did if I wasn't totally immersed in the show with everyone else. The opening song Believe (Nobody Knows) was a great intro to the night as to what we should expect. The opening drums in the second song Compound Fracture will instantly get your blood pumping and this song is one to look forward to live!!! From what I remember, In It's Infancy (The Waterfall) was a bit slower and this is an absolutely beautiful song and worthy to share the same name as the album. It reminds me a bit of Wonderful, Golden, Bermuda Highway, ect. Spring (Among The Living) I knew was going to be incredible from having heard it prior to this show and man, did they ever kick it up a notch for the live show. This and the song Tropics (Erase Traces) were my favorites smile emoticon Tropics had a very nice buildup to to a fantastically rocking finish!!! I believe it was a 4 song encore. Jim came out solo for an always beautiful performance of Bermuda Highway. Second was a song that felt familiar, but I am not sure what it was. Possibly a cover, possibly one of the bonus songs from the deluxe album, maybe something from one of their EP's, not quite sure. Third was the most downright intense version of Master Plan that ever was or will be, end of discussion smile emoticon Closing song was another I can't put my finger on, maybe another bonus song, cover, or something I am a little less familiar with off of Tennessee Fire?? I don't know but it bugs me that I can't figure out those 2 songs. Well see what the setlist says when it gets posted and I have one of those "Oh, Duh" moments.
As for the band, you could tell they were a little on edge being the first live show for fans. They definitely nailed it musically, but didn't have a ton of stage presence. The encore was their normal rocking self, jumping around the stage (as small as it was) - Carl and Jim just pounding on their guitars with their magnificent hair flying everywhere, Tom headbanging over his bass, Bo jumping around the keyboards, and Patrick . . . well he was a friggin animal on drums all night long!!! I really look forward to their future shows once they feel a bit more comfortable with the new songs.
A few other tidbits I noticed from the night - Jim played guitar on every song, no omnichord or strictly vocals. He also didn't pick up his Flying V once for the new songs. Carl had a few songs on his pedal steel guitar rig that were just freakin amazing, as expected. That dude can make some babies with his guitar playing!!! Bo was styling a new hat and I am not sure if I like it or not, lol. It was more of what you would wear for a fly fishing expedition than expect to see from a rock band, but who am I to judge smile emoticon My fellow Roll Call members and their guests were amazing too. Always an intense crowd and super friendly, no pushing up front at the last minute, tons of energy. The venue asked everyone to keep their phones in their pockets, no photography, ect and I didn't see one person try to sneak pictures or recordings. Everyone was extremely lucky to be there and it really showed that we were all there for the love of the band and their music.
And how the heck did I forget to add this in my original post, Jim's vocals are on a whole new level!! From the shows I have seen, his voice tends to get a little bit raspy, especially towards the end of a show when he is holding some longer notes. I didn't hear one single hiccup, scratch, or hint of struggling keep it going. It hit me during Master Plan that his voice is far stronger than I have ever heard. Best way I can explain it is he sounded far better and seemed to be giving it less effort. Could be he hasn't done live shows in a while, maybe the vocals on the new album aren't as demanding, it was a shorter show only being 14 songs, but I noticed a ton of improvement!!!
