I suggested a possible ZPZ headliner in the headliner's thread, but even if they did a pre-headlining slot like they did at 10KLF this year, I would love to hear Frank's music at Bonnaroo. Dweezil's been getting some flack for being a high-priced cover band, but after seeing them last week I was blown away w/ the dedication and musicianship the band displayed. So what do you think? Would you like to see ZPZ at Bonnaroo? I, for one, would love it.

I've been more than a little weary about giving ZPZ a chance, but I must admit that I am very interested.
I LOVE Zappa's music and I've heard nothing but incredible reviews of their shows, but I'm just not sure that I'd be able to shake the "cover band" feeling(one thing I absoulutely despise).
I've gone back and forth on it everytime it's mentioned around me and this time is no different.
So, even though I'm voting "great googly-moogly yes" out of my love and respect for Frank, I actually feel more like a "maybe".

^^^^^
I know how you feel. The "cover band" stigma is hard to shake. The sad truth is that since Frank is dead, a "cover band" is the only way to bring his music to Bonnaroo. Also, since Zappa always thought of himself as a composer who happened to play the electric guitar and used a rock band as his "orchestra," I guess I don't mind hearing another "orchestra" play the compositions. Would anyone complain about hearing a great orchestra play Stravinsky because Igor is dead and isn't conducting? Does that make the performance less "authentic."
Frank may be dead, but hismusic IS living on in his son's work, and I think that music really needs to be heard at Bonnaroo, esp. since the whole "jam-band" aesthetic owes a lot to Zappa's music.

Is it really a cover band if it's in the family?

I mean putting Jason Bonham in a zep reunion wouldn't make them a cover band, would it?

If it were w/ Page's, Plant's and JPJ's sons', then yes, I could see it being considered a cover band. That's ZPZ's preoblem: other than a handful of musicans from Zappa's old bands, the ZPZ band is all new, younger musicians. This leads some people to doubt the band's slogan "accept no substitutes," as they are all essentially, substitutes. But they are a bunch of talented players, and Dweezil just keeps getting better and better with each tour. That alone should be enough for them to deserve to be the offical ambassadors of Frank's music. Plus Frank taught the stuff to Dweezil.

Most definitely, especially if they had both Steve Vai and Ray White. That would be ridiculous.

Literally trembling with excitement. I wasn't coherently alive during the time of Zappa. I would love to hear "Billy the mountain". and cover band shmother band. Same concept as a family owned business. The son has more to prove than just any old guy from anywhere.
