Let me start by saying thank you to those who nominated and have supported my nomination for this prestigious award. I'd also like to say that everything Horn said above is true. Except...I'm not quite nice as people here may think. In fact, I have twice felt like I crossed the line in posts in being too sarcastic and immediately apologized to both people in PMs.
Further, having not been here last year, I wasn't sure of the protocol for securing the award post-nomination. Thanks, ITM, for posting the original thread - I've got it now.
I would like to remind people that I'm more than just a "nice" poster. Although, I do have the ability to put things nicely into words. Exhibit A:
Yay to finding a place where I can post 1,000 messages about music, books, wine, and just about anything else I want.
Yay to a place with people like Bonzai, Holls, CKS, and GL who welcomed me right away and helped me get comfy in my little space on this island of misfit toys.
Yay to a place with people like Juggs and Flanzo who can be sharp with their words but make me think and form opinions smartly.
Yay to a place with people like NoD, GL, Dave M, Fuzzy, monster, Fear, Zapp, Bishop, glennron, patty, hoodoo, noage, and many others who keep me up to date on music and play such a great, wide variety of music that I'm constantly trying out new music and getting reminded of the good stuff I'd forgotten.
Yay to a place filled with tons of other good people who have formed this cool place into what it is and allow an old guy like me to hang out, stay young, and constantly think about, read about, talk about, and listen to my one, true passion - music.
I have a lot of friends in real life but none of them, outside Mrs. toml30 (and God bless her!), appreciate music the way I do. None of them listen to music with as much variety or with as much passion. I never realized how sad that made me until I started really getting involved here, and became a happier person because no matter how much I get made fun of for not wanting to only listen to whatever the Top 40 station says I should, I can come here later and you guys know who I'm talking about, have listened to it, and have an opinion on it. That counts for something in my life.
Yay for pondering all day on what to post for #1,000 and finally thinking of something worthwhile. Thank you all.
I wish every post of mine could so deeply touch this community and articulate all that is right with Inforoo. I appreciate all 30+ of you who "liked" this post.
My mother always told me to be fair and smart in the things I do, and others will do the talking for me. Exhibit B:
Well I don't get embarrassed very often, but I have three minor embarrassments all surrounding the same event. A few years ago I was on Jeopardy. I had a friend come out with me and some friends from LA and San Diego also came to the taping. When my name was called to take the stage, I was put in the middle position between two women. They were both taller than me, and they literally had to get a stepstool for me to stand on behind the podium so we'd all look the same height. So before it even started, I could hear my buddies roaring in the audience when this happened.
Then, what luck! a music category in the first round. I was rocking through the whole category and then an answer came up about an REM song about Andy Kaufman. And I froze - all I could think of was Moon Man, and I knew that wasn't right. So I definitely got embarrassed and my friends could not stop joking about Mr. Music Man not knowing an REM song and I think they called me Moon Man for about a year.
Finally, when the show finally aired my wife, a bunch of friends, family, and workmates threw a viewing party at a restaurant. I forgot until it finally came on, that my "story" for talking to Alex was about how I won a beauty contest in drag as an alter ego who sang "Natural Woman" for my talent portion. My friends and family already knew the story but my workmates never quite looked at me the same after that.
What made me happy about this thread were the following responses:
Win or lose, I still love Horn and all the judges, will continue being "nice", but also continue to post in not just the Headliner thread, but the wine thread, the beer thread, the literature thread, the movie threads, and Now Playing where I can share my knowledge and love of all genres of music with you all.
Oh, and I know there's some folks here who are Beyonce fans - just FYI, I made a huge effort to get downtown today so I'd have a good spot to hear her sing for the inauguration. She was fantastic, for those fans in the DC area who didn't go.
