our choices are shoes (or not) and shorts...(or not)
but as far as the chafing goes, there's a product called bodyglide that runners use when they're doing distance runs that works really well that you could probably find at any store that caters to runners. it's just a gel stick that you use on any problem areas and i'm sure you could just toss it in a purse or backpack and take it with you. on the swollen feet issue, icing down your feet at the end of the day (whether your feet hurt or not) is a good idea. if you do that for a little while each night it'll help prevent all that pain from building up (taking tylenol and a multivitamin each day will help too). those have all worked for me (i'm a runner).
and ladies, while you're dealing with all that fun, i'll be the dirty, sunburned, unshaven guy next to you wearing nothing but a pair of shorts, sunglasses and a back pack screaming "BONAROOOOOOO!!!"
